GF wants a Camaro

They're coming in RHD :)

edit: Odd. Official GM statement says yes, other sources say no. So maybe?

I think this is still current - the last I had heard was that GM had written off any LHD Camaros, unfortunately :(

GM has ditched plans to offer a right-hand drive version of the Chevrolet Camaro in the UK when the car is launched in 2011.

Autocar has learned that Chevrolet has abandoned plans to build the new Chevrolet Camaro muscle car in right-hand drive, and will bring in significantly fewer models than initially thought.

Tooling for the right-hand-drive Chevrolet Camaro was already underway, but will now be cancelled in order to help preserve GM’s dwindling cash stocks.

Just 100 Chevrolet Camaros will be imported – 50 coupes and 50 convertibles – in order to keep numbers below the threshold for type-approval regulations.

All UK-bound Chevrolet Camaros will get the 500bhp 6.2-litre V8 Corvette engine; the US-market entry-level 296bhp V6 model will not be available.

Despite the small number of imports, Chevrolet believes it will still make a profit thanks to the car’s £35k price tag, much more than the car costs in the US.

Last month Chevrolet revealed it had received 10,000 advanced orders for the new Camaro in the US.

Hah, you edited as I quoted - yea, as far as I'm aware it's dead in the water but who knows :) Stand to be corrected at a later date!

Hi there

Before you buy a Camaro do make sure you test drive one for at least 1-2 hours as I can tell you now there are some real annoying issues with the Camero due to the funky design/looks.

The most annoying one is the slits for sidewindows, due to such a high doorline visibility in the Camaro is shockingly poor, made even more so when using a LHD model in the UK.

Also remember these use the Vette 6.2l engine which is quite a thirsty engine, you will probably average 11-13MPG in all seriousness which you will feel on the wallet.

Apart from that they go well, the engine sounds lovely and they handle quite well too. But do be aware the new 5.0l Mustang beats it at everything, performance, handling and cost of running, but I will admit the Camaro is one very funky looking car.

But if your buying on looks then buy the Dodge Challenger, its the nicest looking and best sounding of them all, just a shame its handling is the poorest. Amazing how the Corvette and Mustang with leaf springs and live axles still handle better than these new American cars with IRS....

If your girlfriend wants a Camaro I want your girlfriend! (mine wants a Yamaha R1 ...sounds like lawn-mower and is short of wheels :( )...that aside it simply has to be the V8 ...it's the whole point of the car.

I saw quite a few of these in Canada and I love the way they look and sound. I haven't driven one but I am told that they are rather good to drive too, unlike the Dodge Challenger.

Is the awful Challenger handling something that there's stuff to fix already available? Suspension components, nice hats etc?

Unless it's twice the average salary, then don't bother, what!

Well the thing with the Challenger is, it isn't a fast as the Camaro or the new Stang and it costs more in the first place ...so while it probably is possible to sort the handling it's going to cost you a fair bit more out of the box. Still, they do look and sound fantastic.

Yes the handling can be improved with run of the mill items such as uprated shocks/springs, thicker front and rear anti-roll bars. But the Challengers biggest problem is its 1900kg kerb weight and the fact its using an old Mercedes under-pinnings. So yes it can be improved but its never gonna be a precise handling car.

The Mustang on the other hand can be made into something real special even with its live axle, the biggest advantage the Mustang has is its 1550kg kerb weight.

The Camaro sits in the middle, its about 1700kg kerb weight and does have IRS so the handling is pretty good, but every review out there shows the Mustang been the sharper handling car especially the newer 2010 onwards Mustangs. :)

Then don't forget the lightness of the Mustang and its new engine means that 440BHP V8 can still return over 30MPG on the motorway, thats quite some achievement for a big powerful V8 car that can hit 100mph in approx 10s or so. :)

Wow, thread derailment or what!

Thanks Gibbo, useful info.

FWIW, the BM costs me around £4k a year to lease. I could have bought it outright but used the money instead for a deposit on a mortgage. It's a better deal for me to lease a car than it is to buy it. My GF can comfortably afford a Camaro on her salary.

My GF will probably do the same. I think the V8 will be overkill as she will be the main driver. I was just conscious that if the Charger we had in the states is anything to go by it will feel a bit low powered.

Whoa, which you lose along with the car at the end unless you choose to buy the car?

So its actually 19k to rent the car for 3 years? That's huge money when you consider it was a used car?

Eh? No, at the end of the 3 years, the car is given a guaranteed minimum value (£13k according to BMW). If it's worth more than this I get the difference from my £7k to the value to use as the deposit on the next car). If it's this or less, then yes, I'll have lost a bit of money and have to top up the deposit if I want low monthly payments.

Can you get that 7k back into your hand at the end of the lease? I thought you always hot the difference between the gfv and It's true value to use as deposit for the next car, but your original deposit is gone.

So 19k over 3 years to lease a used 530 then?

No, only the difference between the deposit and the guaranteed value of the car £13k (so, £6k) can be given back if I choose to leave BMW and look elsewhere
