Gfs £1,000 laptop is - literally - smoking

Yeah ok troll was probably not the best word to use, I didn't really mean it. I was just... saying... something. I dunno. Anyhoo!

The battery isn't removeable like acer or dell laptops. I'm going to guess it's screwed under one of the 5 removeable panels so I'll have to wait 'till I'm home tomorrow and get a watch screwdriver on it.
even so i would be surprised if it was soldered in:D
it would most likely be under a cover or may be under the keyboard but using the usual ZIF type connector found in say Dell etc lappys:)

Why does your GF have a £1k laptop?

If I'm right in thinking all she does on it is write essays and surf the net then all she needs is a £350 one (in case you have to buy a new one). If I'm wrong and she needs a powerful laptop, my apologies :)

and am I the only one who picked up on a guy going by the name "furnace" has a problem with something burning? :D

Are you sure she hasn't accidently got water in it or something?

I don't see the retailer or manufacturer doing anything for her as 2.5 years is probably seen as long enough for a piece of equipment to last. I don't even think the sale of goods act will cover her no matter what it initially cost after this length of time. Has she got any form of insurance for it or did she take any additional warranty support out when she purchased it?

Bottom of the screen? sounds like the inverter could be at fault.

The manufacture will probably not help. If it i the inverter, you can probably buy a screen from ebay. If you need her data, the disk can be removed and plugged into a ide converter, and then into a PC.

Those inverters fail more often than the backlight itself! they output a voltage high enough to strike a plasma, so they will give you a lovely tingly feeling if you touch them when live :D
