Hey guys,

Today my rear wheel decided to screw up at the freewheel and unfortunately the freewheel just isn't going to come out (rounding off the socket part inside). This is my 3rd freewheel to screw up within a year so I'm giving up!

I need a new wheelset preferably around 30mm+ depth (like the current (more for looks hah?))... Apart from that I'm at a loss due to all the choice!

I was looking at Hunt wheels but i'm unsure how good they are in comparison and i'm open to any suggestions that would fit the budget of around £400-600.

Any help is appreciated!

Trox

Edit--
Just noticed a rider weight limit of 95kg on the Hunt , although i'm around 75kg does this mean the hunt wheels are more susceptible to damage from pot hole hits?

not at all - all wheels tend to have a "rider limit" on them - mine say around 85kg and if heavier just check more often!

Hunt have a good rep

I also spoke to https://www.baxcarbon.co.uk/ on facebook - very nice chap, knowledgable and helpful.

http://www.zuus.co.uk/ as well were on my list.

Side note: The Giant PR-2 wheelset are pretty generic 'factory' off-the-shelf wheels. I replaced mine with a £100 set of Campagnolo Khamsin and they were 'better' even though they were pretty much the same weight. I had lots of problems with keeping the Giant's wheel true (and they were getting worse).

After those I 'splashed out' on a set of Shimano RS81's 24 depth. Got them on a deal for £250 (rather than £350) and they are fantastic wheels. So light and responsive in comparison, a carbon/alu combi rim so retaining an alloy braking surface for wet weather braking and not needing different pads.

I've not ridden Hunt wheels but they're very well regarded. I'm probably getting the aero disk set of them in the near future for my main bike.

Your budget is good, you can get better wheels than the RS81's but equally if coming in way under your budget is preferable then they would be my personal recommendation. Maybe the 35mm version of them. Campagnolo Zondas are very well regarded and could be another alternative, an alloy rim rather than the combo. Bear in mind that you can get 'non-campagnolo' versions of the Zonda/Khamsin by going with the Fulcrum 'Racing' range.

Cheers for the replies guys.

I checked out those sites Booyaka, some impressive pricing for carbon wheels :o.

The wheels you mention Roady unfortunately are non disc brake wheels.

So far I'm swaying toward either...
MASON x HUNT 4Season Disc | Road Aero/CX Wheelset | 1585g | 27Deep 23Wide |
HUNT Aero Light Disc | Road Wheelset | 1469g | 28Deep 22Wide |

One from Roady
Fulcrum Racing 5 LG Disc Road

Baring in mind my bike is a Defy Advance 1 2016 are the HUNT Aero Light Disc worth thinking about? It's hard to see the difference in the photos. I just like the weight and depth numbers along with the earlier instock date.

Ah, got my wires crossed as saw 'PR 2' as I had experience with them, but missed the 'Disc'!

There are Disc Campagnolo Zonda's (new for 2017). I'm a Specialized Diverge owner and many other owners ride the Zipp 30 Course's which are only slightly out of your budget. I think last time I played around with them I could get the price near to £600 by buying the front and rear from different places (CRC I recall being particularly cheap for one or the other; at the moment the wheelset is cheapest there).

Oh, cheers for the links Roady, those Zipp 30 Course wheels look excellent and have some really good reviews.

Quite tempted!

Not sure about the Chinese 50mm?? Hah

I just wouldn't know where to start looking at buying them, or even knowing what is worth a punt.

Seems I'm back to concidering the hunt wheels, going to give it a week before rushing in though.

Mate of mine has done 2k so far this year on a set of 50mm Chinese carbon wheels - cost him £280 inc postage. Zero issues so far.

Zuus could be a good shout, you'll pay more than buying them 'direct' (as above) but they're basically a UK seller of chinese carbon. They even do UK warranty & I think crash replacement if they're some of the things which you're concerned about. I expect there's other companies like Zuus who do the same.

Mind telling me the vendor or PMing me? I'm on the hunt for chinese 50mm discs but find it hard to find a reputable vendor. Oh I'm looking for centerlock though.

Unfortunately though I did look for centrelock at the time I couldn't find any. I just checked and the store I used on Aliexpress seems to have gone now unfortunately :/ Maybe try SoliD's suggested store and ask them if they can get some centrelock hubs in?

Yep sent an email this morning. I'm hesitant though as I'm a heavy rider. 90-100kg (depending on season, bodybuilding is my 1st hobby, cycling is 2nd) + 9.xkg bike. Thinking of picking up Cosmic Pro Carbons.

I'm in the ~85kg territory so I'm not massively behind you. I've never felt like I was really pushing the limits of things on carbon to be honest. I do always go for the slightly higher spoke counts available though (24).
