Do you have the silent ones for segate 320gb on special offer or the noisy ones. Might order one but i dont want the noisy older gen ones.

So do you have pink glue on top or the other ones?

I would be most interested in this also :)

Im planning to buy a 500Gb drive from OC to put in my new rig and am a bit put off by the "luck of the draw" nature of the allegedly noisy (though best performing) Seagate drives, though having said that there will be already a 150Gb Raptor in there which I believe isnt so quiet either.

Im tempted to go for the Samsung Spinpoint 500Gb, but the low access time others have commented upon bothers me as my rig (quad core, Corsair XMS2 9136C5 RAM and BFG GTX 8800) has been built for performance (hopefully :)) and I dont want the HDD potentially bottlenecking it.

Another interested customer here!

I'm not sure whether Gibbo can tell us though, because from what I gather from this post, the colour of the paste doesn't make a difference.

So perhaps the only hope is to see if there's consensus from those who have already purchased and tested.

Well the reason i posted if they have the fast ones "confirmed in stock" more or less. Then perhaps if i phone them and say gibbo said you have the segate drives with the pink glue on which is the quiet ones and so ill buy one but only the pink glue one so make sure you personally check to make sure when packin for me to make sure its got the pink glue on the top of the drive.

Thats what this is all about for me to make sure they have the quiet ones in stock and then i can phone them and try to get them to definatly ship the right version to me and tell them if its not the right one i dont want it.

Oh well, Ive taken the plunge and ordered one from OC

If its ridiculously loud then I hope to send it back, but here's hoping eh?

I was looking at Samsungs, but there are people on other forums complaining about noise, and the other alternative (Western Digital) people seemed to point others to the Seagate as this was the best in terms of performance for a high end rig.

Hopefully given that Ive bought nearly all the parts from OC for this rig (CPU, card and drives etc, Z5500 etc) they may be lenient with me if it is way too loud.

Problem is its a bit of a wait now to Xmas day to see what its like, but I guess it all adds to the excitement!

Basically, as the 320GB drives are so popular, we get through a high volume of drives. We cannot guarantee what Seagate will actually ship into us so it can be pot luck. Up to now we have actually had a lot more silent ones than not.

Well im not spending a ton of money on a new hdd if im not guarenteed the version i want.

So untill i am told yeah mate you can phone up and they will be able to personally pack you a pink glue'd version then i guess ill just get from somewhere else, probably local where i can see for myself before i buy. Shame tho as it will probably be a little bit more expensive.

Hmm even tho you switched specials today the price is the same for the segate 320gb. Ah well its good i supose you kept the price as if i do get a confirm that i can get a ping glue version then ill buy one at the special price still.

Meh just phoned up and was told no they cant get the version i want, there too lazy he more or less said to look for the pink glue on the top of the drive.

Meh what a way to lose a customer there lol. It is easily visable on oem drives as its right there in front of you. So if you cant spend 2 mins looking for the ping glue bit then well you dont deserve my custom.

just had a row over the phone with them.... i ended up with a noisy one nad basically they are just blaming it on my case, they say they are testing it on a peice of wood.... how does that equate to real world usage, wood has much different acoustics than metal

so now im left with a loud 60 odd quid drive.... and to add insult to injury i payed full (not this week only) for it.
Wont give a credit note or store credit so i can buy a spinpoint either.

so i have been stuck with my old 40gig maxtor that isnt as loud as the seagate.... i am furious about the wood testing however... also as soon as they were phoned up they tested it, i would like to know what would have happened if they weren't phoned.

what would they lose selling it as bgrade or clearance though? maybe 10 quid? 10 quid on one drive when they must push a good 10 grands worth of parts everyday

OCUK need to find the Christmas spirit :) the christmas smilies are not enough though :D

HI there

Sorry guys but I no longer look after storage (HDD's) as I've given that job to my Padowan Slackworth.

P.S. I am interested in this wood thing? As we don't actually test the products we sell as such I'd like to know who said anything about wood, seems rather bizzare.

I have a Seagate Barracuda 320GB SATA II 7200.10, which has the white glue and was made in China, and it is not noisey, quite the opposite, it runs quietly, so not all of the HDD with white glue and made in China are noisey. :)

The chances of getting a good one is very high - the ppl that post on forums with a noisy one are a minority - go ahead and have a good Xmas :)

It is not a matter of us being lazy. If you ring up and then one of the sales staff go and check they could say "yes the one I have just checked is fine". However, after you have placed your order, the drive that has just been checked may be shipped on another order and then you wouldn't be happy because we sent you the wrong one. It's the same reason we don't guarantee CPU steppings.
For your information, I have just gone and checked the current box on the shelf and they have the pink blob. There is 20 per box - the others we have should be from the same batch but as I say, we cannot guarantee this.

As far as this testing on wood goes, I'd also be interested to hear who told you that.

The following relates to any mail-order transaction from any store;

Under the distance selling regulations you can cancel the contract and they have to return your money, minus the shipping charges, provided you notify them within 7 days of the order. There are some things you have to do to make sure it is returned to them in a condition the can resell it in, but basically you should be able to return it within 7 days, no questions asked.
