Gibbo - Phenom when?

anychance these new chips will run with DDR2, given the silly price of DDR3 at the mo?

They will run with DDR2 yes. Many can just drop into current AM2 boards with simply a BIOS update. All current AM2 boards are DDR2, so for this to work, the memory controller (don't forget it's inside the CPU) must be DDR2 as well.

If/when AMD switch to DDR3, you'll need a whole new CPU, socket, etc.

I thought it was AM2 and AM2+ backwardly compatible, AM2+ and AM3 backwardly compatible.

Obviously if you use the older socket spec you lose certain features such as slower HT speeds for AM2 and no DDR3 for AM2+ etc.

The idea was to allow for a broader upgrade path that didn't require a new mobo unless going for AM3 outright of course.

I am seriously considering getting one of these. Are there any early pre release benchmarks?
Considering your current system obliterates it, what gives? lol

(Benchmarks are out there, AMD is tackling the low-end market once more...)

There is a review on OCWorkbench sort of but its is rubbish does really tell you much about the performace at all.

Also you live in Bangor. :) :)

Bangor rules mate. Nice women and the Octagon +Time. Not.
I'll go look for Benchmarks

Clock for clock it's marginally slower than Intel, we just need to see higher clock figures and overclocking way past 3GHz which will come with the next stepping.

I wouldn't buy a Phenom before xmas myself, I'd wait until the new year and get a revised stepping.

Yesterday I was reading the thread about Phenom availability and its price at OcUK. This morning I have realised that things might've gone ugly and the thread as a result of that has disappeared.

Any idea?

Yes it looks like the thread has been killed, basically some people had made assumptions as to what the rrp of the cpus would be at launch and then started bitching when the prices were higher than people assumed they would be. There isent really anything wrong with the OC price, I think its maybe best left at that unless you want this thread to get deleted as well.

I think that once the market has been flooded with these chips things (price wise) will settle down. People should be waiting for the B3 revision, especially after the TBL mess.

It's hardly surprising that the other thread's gone but the majority of things it pointed out were correct.

On a more on-topic front, anyone know when the Phenom 9400 is due for release?

intel vs amd

intel £159.79 for a 2.4 quad core

amd £199.73 for a 2.3 quad core..
which is in early benchmarks clock for clock slower

why would anyone buy a phenom at the moment?

Jeez don't be so naive, the Intel chip has been on hte market for a considerable amount of time supply is rich and demand has subsided, as have the prices.

The Phenom is in high demand, low stock, new release. Give it a month or two and the prices will plummet especially with the release of the new stepping which will ramp speeds with reduced volts.

Hi there

Phenom 9500's arrive into stock tomorrow. :)

Were also expecting QX9650's anyday this week too. :)
