Gigabit Internet Speedtest

Describe the topology. A lot of people say "I'm wired in" when they actually mean "I am plugged into a powerline extender and forgot about it"

Its just a droid box wired with an Ethernet cable directly into the router in the same room, and a games PC upstairs which is connected directly to the router downstairs via an Ethernet cable through the ceiling.

He doesn’t have any power over Ethernet devices and besides he’s tried the WiFi of his iPhone 11 and that gives same low results, as I said my iPhone XR gives me over 600 mbit/s when standing next to router.

We both have Netgear Nighthawk routers mines the AC1900 one his is AC1750 I believe, it’s the one that’s one below the AC1900 anyway.

The router and ONT are two separate devices, the ONT is also the modem and then you either take their supplied modem less router or buy your own. They always supply and install their own ONT and then you’ve only got control of the router.

The router has been setup the same way since we both had 236 mbit/s down and I’ve not needed to reconfigure anything on mine through the recent speed changes, as I say we have similar Netgear routers that we bought ourselves.

Check that WiFi is definitely disabled.

He’s definitely not using WiFi. He’s running a CAT 5E cable from games PC upstairs directly into the router downstairs through the ceiling and a short CAT 5E from the ONT into the routers WAN port.

CAT 5E is guaranteed for a gigabit over 100M so is well capable of supporting a gigabit Fibre connection.

He has also tried the Technicolor TG589 vac v2 router that the ISP provided when he first took out his subscription and apparently its even worse.

Just an update, he replaced both the CAT 5e cable to his PC and the CAT 5e cable between his ONT and Router with CAT 8. That made no difference. The ISP have been in touch via email and want him to send the downstream information from the Router.

I’ve got a similar Router to him and we both can’t find the downstream information anywhere in the Routers setup. So he’s replied to their email and we await further responses.

I’d have thought the downstream information would be on the ONT but as far as I know you can’t login into it.

The so called “router” is basically a wired/wireless access point and it doesn’t do any routing it just sends the data out over the WAN port to the ONT/Gateway which handles the routing.

Had a message from my brother this morning. He's switched off the ONT switched off the Router switched it all back on then done a factory reset on the Router and set it all back up again and now his speed is what it should be...

I don't understand why you would comment if you're not qualified or don't understand as it leads to misinformation being spread around forums.

Well my original post linked to this result taken on the 07/10/12 but I edited it...

I then got another result from someone else dated 13/01/13 which proves it could handle 1 Gbps...

I didn't get onto the service until 10/08/18 and I was supposed to be on a 1 Gbps service for a months trial, however I didn't get near 1 Gbps speed.

It wasn't until 28/03/20 that I was put on a 1 Gbps service again to help those working from home that I finally saw 1 Gbps speeds from my connection.

So for some reason I wasn't getting near 1 Gbps initially when I was supposed to which led to confusion about whether I actually could.

Looks like two different threads have been rolled into one here. First problem I had was being unable to get 1 Gbps from my connection. The second was my brother was only getting 180 Mbps up and down until he did a factory restore on his Netgear router.

I have never done a factory restore on my router and have never seen speeds as low as 180 Mbps.

I believe he had restarted both the ONT and Router but hadn't actually reset the router to factory defaults.

Well it’s bad news it’s gone back down to the speeds he was getting the other day. Says it’s a pain to factory reset it because he has a number of other attached devices that need setting up again too.

Got to be the router or ONT surely there’s not much else it can be.

It's the only way to rule in or out devices as being at fault, so there's no more we can do

He’s thinking of buying a new router which he can open, test and return if it doesn’t solve the problem. You are allowed to returned opened stuff under the distance selling regulations. Won’t be buying at ocUK anyway so don’t get your knickers in a twist.

I've had a chat with my brother and he informs me that our cousin has similarly low speeds such as him...

I believe he's paying for a 1 Gbps service whereas my brother and I are not. My cousin is no idiot, he's a senior software developer.

My brother has ordered a new NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 Smart WIFI Router (R8000) so we'll see what happens with that.

I've got another friend who is getting the same speeds as me. Very strange...
