For those that wish to know here is a gigabit internet speedtest result obtained when testing against the nearest server...

So now you know what to expect from a gigabit fibre optic connection.

Then they should not be selling it as 1Gb, as you can't actually get that.

Wouldn't be the first time a broadband supplier over sold their service. Technically they can call it a gigabit because it is based on gigabit technology even if you cannot actually attain that speed.

Its like when I had 512kbit/s ADSL which if you convert to bytes by dividing by 8 you get 64Kbytes/s. I never saw a download above 55Kbytes/s meaning the connection was maxed out 440kbit/s a little way off the theoretical 512kbit/s.

Do you use a router? If so, which?

Just like to point out that this is not actually my connection but a speedtest obtained by someone else who has gigabit fibre.

My area is not upgraded until next year at the earliest, all I know about the supplied router is that its made by Tilgin who are based at http://www.tilgin.com/

So it will probably be one of the ones listed on their site.

I'm still waiting for the technical reasons why you can't get 1Gbit form a 1Gbit line.

Well it appears you can't in Jersey but then again it maybe speedtest or hardware restricted. In all honesty I assumed the result obtained in Jersey was indicative of the type of speeds gigabit would achieve across the board but it appears it isn't if Hyperoptics results are anything to go by.

Bottom line is I am not qualified to comment.

1Gbit will achieve 1Gbit with capable hardware and servers capable of handling the bandwidth.

I don't understand why you would comment if you're not qualified or don't understand as it leads to misinformation being spread around forums.

Yeah sorry, to be honest I have seen higher results posted on youtube videos so knew that what was obtained here in Jersey wasn't the fastest ever but was still pretty impressed hence why I started this thread.

Just received a load more speedtest.net results from my contact in Jersey who is on Jersey Telecoms Gigabit Fibre Optic Service and they are as follows;

Jersey to London: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368932905.png
Jersey to Skipton: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368932091.png
Jersey to Guernsey: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368930637.png
Jersey to Bournemouth: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368920874.png
Jersey to France: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368922098.png
Jersey to New York: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368923005.png
Jersey to San Francisco: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368924438.png
Jersey to Tokyo: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368926179.png
Jersey to Perth: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2368927546.png

Quote "As a more useful metric, I am pulling a steady 13.5MB/sec from a virtual server hosted in Manchester, and about 6.7MB/sec from a physical server hosted in Germany."

13.5MB/Sec on 1Gbit is quite weak to be honest. Might as well of got the 100Mbit service.

Yeah but the speedtest.net results obtained from locations across the world indicate much higher is possible.

Jersey to London d/l 439mbit/s
Jersey to Skipton d/l 388mbit/s
Jersey to Guernsey d/l 77mbit/s
Jersey to Bournemouth d/l 308mbit/s
Jersey to France d/l 248mbit/s
Jersey to New York d/l 66mbit/s
Jersey to San Francisco d/l 23mbit/s
Jersey to Tokyo d/l 24mbit/s
Jersey to Perth d/l 6.5 mbit/s

The only ones which got lower then 100mbit/s are New York, San Francisco, Tokyo and Perth which are all across the other side of the world.

Guernsey got lower than 100mbit/s too but that probably says more about the state of the network in Guernsey rather then anything else as all the other UK ones were much higher.

Its nice to see Jersey Telecoms Fibre Optic Gigabit Broadband up there in the top ten list of fastest ISPs.

I link you to these speedtest.net results obtained by other subscribers to Jersey Telecoms Gigabit Fibre Optic Broadband where they hit near the gigabit speed when testing against the Jersey Telecoms server.

My brother and I live in Jersey and up until a couple of months ago we both had this speed connection...

At some point recently they have upgraded our speeds for free and I'm now getting this...

Even more recently during the coronavirus they have temporarily increased everyone to a gigabit connection and I am now getting this...

However my brother who is with the same ISP and fibre connection has noticed his speeds have decreased...

Any idea what it could be, I've noticed his upload speeds have increased which would suggest he has been upgraded to the gigabit speed but the speeds he is getting are woefully under what one should expect.

Ask him to try a different computer if possible and a different cable too.

He’s tried a droid box wired to the router with a different Ethernet cable and also his iPhone 11 right next to the router. I can get over 600 mbit/s with my iPhone XR right next to router.
