Gigabyte change the cooling solution on the Radeon R9 290 (X)

Can't you just set a manual fan profile like the rest of us? Or flash the old bios back.

^^^ Exactly what I've done with my Windforce 290X, though I have to say that the default fan profile was okay with my setup but I have tweaked it more to my liking with afterburner anyway.

These cards are never going to run the same with the default fan profile in every different setup they are installed in.

Setting a custom profile is the way to go.

Been more than happy with my card with regards to heat and noise levels.

That is precisely what I am trying to do at the moment LtMatt.
I just find that hitting the right balance between decent cooling performance and resulting noise is not easy :(

May I ask what your profile looks like? could be helpful ;)

Furry muff.

This probably won't help you but this is what i use for my reference cards in crossfire and i get no throttling. This is running a 5% overclock from typical 290 stock clocks. I find temps sit around 90c generally playing BF4 online with vsync off. Max fan speed of 55% though it normally sits just under that.

Thanks LtMatt. My aim is to ahve the card's fans not passing the 50% speed mark as I find it too after otherwise.

What I find interesting in your Afterburner screen is that you have -50 core voltage. Do you think I could easily try to undervolt the card?

Plz show me a 780ti for ~£510, the guy you replied to said he spent £480 on the 290x. The cheapest 780ti I've seen is as I said best part of £100 more(£70 more). Unless the prices have gone up recently due to the mining craze the most expensive custom 290x ocuk have is £500, the rest are £470/£480.

Not disagreeing with you on the markup on the non reference as you're right about them being high, the reference 290 were like £300-£330 and the non defence are £380 while they should be like £350 and the 290x reference cheapest it had hit on ocuk was £399 but usually like £420/£430 and again non ref should be £30 or so cheaper than they are.

I would, but its against the rules, you need to shop around, deals change all the time

Ok I think I have managed to find an acceptable custom fan profile, thanks to a slight undervolting of the card. Fan speed is set to never go above 50% and during my benchmarks/gaming sessions the max load temperature tops up around 80-85°C. And of course that is without experiencing any throttling.

Its worth a try. It helps keeps temps lower which in turn means you can keep the fans lower.
