Gigabyte DS3 Won't boot

Right, I asked in the other threads but got told to make a separate one.

Basically, it's just spinning the fans for a second, then it powers off. I get nothing on screen at all.

I've tried booting it with only the processor installed and only the power connectors connected. I get continuous from the speaker when I start it up this way, and the manual tells me this is a power error.

I get this with three spearate fully working PSUs.

When I stick the memory in (OCZ Value Pro 667) I don't get any beeps, but I still ge the problem with short fan spins followed by a shutdown.

Using a C2D E6600.

Any clues?

It's not shorted, I've written that out of the equation. It's all connected fine.

Is it a broken mobo? Should I RMA it?

Might have hit yet another incompatiable memory issue with the DS3. Got any other DDR2, preferably DDR667 that works at 1.8v stock?

Nope, that's the only DDR2 I've got unfortunately.

I can't see why the memory would cause the symptoms I'm getting. Every other motherboard I've used that's had bad memory just comes up with a POST error. This doesn't even display anything on screen or even start to boot.

What would be the best thing to do? Send the mobo back or send the memory back?

Had a very similar experience with my ds3 on initial boot.

I needed to do a full cmos clear,

this is the correct order :

1) pull power cord from psu.

2)remove battery AND then short out the battery connectors with a screwdriver for about 5-10seconds.

3) connect clr_cmos jumpers.

4) leave for 10-15minutes

5) remove cmos clear jumper

6) replace battery and power cable.

Install just 1 stick of ram and pc should boot to bios.

Flash bios to latest beta F4 and earliest chance.

Hope this helps

How do I connect a clear cmos header when one wasn't even supplied with the mobo?

Would a CMOS header from any other mobo be ok to use?

Not necessarily bad memory, just some memory don't get on with it for multitudes of reasons, such as wrong CAS latency at boot and some memory won't boot at stock 1.8v especially if they're rated for more by default.

Right, didn't get back because I was busy packing the thing away. I couldn't get it to work after the CMOS thing suggested.

The voltages are fine as has been pointed out, the only other issue could be the CAS. But I can't see it being a RAM problem, because it doesn't even boot to post without any RAM installed. It acts the same whether it's in or not.

It's got to be a fault power connector on the motherboard, surely?

Ta for all the replies so far.

EDIT* I tried booting by just placing a jumper over the power pins rather than using the lead fromthe case button. I still get the same problem.

Could you not borrow some ram from mate? If not, you might have to buy some el cheapo ddr2 ram.

The symptoms you are suggesting, are exactly the same that people have been getting when using incompatible ram.

You're Not Alone

Same kind of problems I am getting on a DQ6 - I suspect the DS3/4/DQ6 all suffer from the same thing. (probably same design fault somewhere)
I can get it to POST using a stick of some older DDR2 but not with my G.SKILL NR.
There seem to be HUNDREDS of threads on this all over the place with lots of stuff to try, but I am presuming that Someone like OCUK will post a general answer on their website.
I'm hanging on to mine at the moment as it has the potential to be a great mobo. Will try to install XP with the 'old' ram I have and see what happens.

Your best bet is just to boot with old ddr2 stick, enter bios and set vdimm to 2.1, cas5,5,15 . Save bios, turn off pc and then remove old ddr2 sticks, replace with Gskill sticks and hopefully the new voltage and timings will boot the pc.

5,5,5,15 Settings

WIll try the memory timing settings today with the +0.3v on the Memory voltage - bad show if the memory wont run with the 'standard' 1.8v though.
Really means that everyone who has this combination will need to keep a stick of old DDR2 for the future in case of mobo problems.
Oops! meant to also mention that there seems to be many postings concerning bios upgrades for the Gigabyte boards.

Tried the above settings with Mem volts at 2.1 (+0.3)
This allowed one stick of the NR to post OK :)
However, when two sticks are inserted the thing reverts back to on ... off .... on .... off ....etc .... etc .....
Maybe next step is to upgrade bios then
Will try to find a DQ6 specific thread for this.

The G.Skill NR is hopeless, just RMA it and get something better. I have two conroe boards, the DQ6 and the AB9pro. Most reports state that the Geil memory on special offer this week is the one to go for.

be advised i have the ds4 and the geil pc 6400 and it will not work.
cpu fan starts for 2 seconds thats it.

sending the ram back looking for something that will work
