Gigabyte DS4 boot problem

Hey guys,

My DS4's just developed a very werid boot problem and I've got no idea whats causing it. Basically the computer boots up and on the POST screen it gets to the bit where it says "Memory Runs at Dual Channel Interleaved" then just freezes. If i press del to get into the bios it just sits forever on "preparing to enter setup...".

I've tried running with a single stick of ram, have disconnected all the hard discs etc but it still won't get passed the the POST screen. It was working fine just a few hours ago so I'm really not sure what is up. Has anyone experianced anything like this or know what might be causing it?

Also is there anyway to force it to boot the backup BIOS? Maybe that will help it but I cant find anyway to force it to switch BIOS.

Thanks.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS? F8 gives access to the Backup BIOS and F12 to the boot recovery system.

It's very unusual for a BIOS to go corrupt all by itself or a system not to boot up in this way unless it's just after a change has been made. If it's an overheating component then sometimes just leaving it switched off for a few hours will let you get back into the BIOS and put everything back to normal.

What do you mean by resetting the BIOS? The same thing as resetting the CMOS?

The only change I made yesterday was using the BIOS updater tool that is accessed through the BIOS screen, I copied the Backup BIOS to the Main BIOS as I wanted to roll back to the F5c revision (I had updated to F7 last week but it seems to break the auto fan control on the SYSFAN header). The BIOS I rolled back to was the same one I had been using for months so I don't see how it could have gone corrupt all of a sudden.
The system was booting fine just after I went back to using the older BIOS and everything seemed to be ok.. then later on when I came to switch it on I get the problem as described above.

Ah, you rolled back a BIOS. That's a real nightmare as the BIOS update programs aren't designed to go backwards and they sometimes don't just clean up all the little bits required. That probably explains it then. I would definitely reset the BIOS/CMOS - take out the battery and disconnect the power supply for at least an hour - the Gigabyte boards seem to have big capacitors to keep the CMOS alive so they do seem to need a long time with the battery out. I would take the battery out (I know it's a pain) as I've had poor results with the jumpers on my DS4.

Ah I see :( I didn't realise you wean't meant to go back to previous versions, I seem to remember doing it before without any trouble but I guess I've just got a bit unlucky this time then.

I've had the battery out all night and it was the same problem still this morning when I put it back in so I guess it's pretty much dead? :o

Shorting out the CMOS clear pins at the back of the my DS4 will always reset the BIOS to its defaults everytime. No need to remove the battery, ever.

Try that. If the system still doesn't boot, take out or unplug as much hardware as you can and then try again.

Sooo very random. I left the battery out again this afternoon and reset the CMOS. Turned it on again just now and hey presto it's decided it would like to work again. Ahh well just happy to have it working again.

Thanks for the help guys :)
