Girl Rig

If you drop from the original Ultra to a GTX, you may regret it later

How? By the time an Ultra actually makes any difference in games the 8800 Series will be old hat. It's a pointless card which exists only for the purposes of e-peen growing and synethetic benchmarking :)

Hey amyparr just a few questions.

How much are you looking to spend all together?

Would you like Vista to be included?

Would you like a new Monitor included in that budget?

How about other Peripherals like Keyboard, Mouse and Speakers?

Last thing, will you be overclocking the system? :)

Ha, a girl thug that plays games all day? Thats not a nice thought.

Spending the rest on handbags and shoes?! lol, no.

Been reading throught the various specs and most seem to think that the ultra is a waste of money, like i say, I do have the cash to spend, I want a high end machine but I don't necessarily want to spend the full 2k just for the sake of it, and I take what Fox says about the Ultra making no difference until the next series is out and it has made me think about going for the GTX.

I'm toying with the idea of also dropping the quad core, getting a decent duo then giving overclocking a go for the first time, then spending the money I save on a kick ass screen and 4gb of good ram.

Everyone keeps saying that the stacker isn't good for cooling, it has 120mm fans though? Surely that will be enough?

I'll post my final config up later, I'm meant to be working atm, hopefully I won't forget anything like, oh, the graphics card this time.

Stick -around 1.5k to 2.0k
I want a mobo, memory, graphics card, processor, ram, hdd, case and now a screen if poss. Like i say above, I don't wanna spend the money for the sake of it so if something really is a total waste of money for some barely recognisable increase in performance then I'm not that bothered, I want the performance more than the 'E-penis' :p

I wasn't planning on vista because every says that it craps up with loads of games, although if I get 4gb of ram I spose I'll need to get a 64bit OS anyway.

I don't need a mouse or keyboard.

I'll probably give overclocking a go depending on the processor (dual core = overclocking).

That total rubbish, try DIRT or Lost Planet, and this is July07, you wont see a new flagship card till at least Jan08, enjoy your Crysis and Bioshock at lower FPS .

Amy, you know what I was told by store, the Coolmaster Stacker is flimsy, the one on display flops about when bumped like a thin piece of metal, and there is no need for 100 fans in a PC lol, most good cases have 1x 120mm intake, 1x 120mm exhaust added to fact the PSU is also a exhaust, then some add 90-120mm in side panel also as intake to hit CPU/GPU or ram area with air.

Its good to get advise, but now you have so much your head must be wasted, go read reviews on each part of a build then try make a choice on each part, the case for me is one of hardest parts to choose, as I have only ever liked the actual look of about 5 cases since 2001, it needs to look ok in my living room aswell as perform well and not be loud outside of games.(controlers sort that)

Also if you own XP 32bit legitly and its retail you can trade it in for XP 64bit (or used to be able to), check MS site.

Ok taking into account everything you have said this is what i have come up with.

Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 "LGA775 Conroe" 3.00GHz (1333FSB)
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400C4 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit X2
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache X2
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1 Soundcard
Samsung SH-183LBEBN 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA Lightscribe
Seasonic M12 Modular 600W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply
Akasa Eclipse 62 Aluminium Case - No PSU

Total : £1,776.99 ;) :D

Right the Dell Ultrasharp Monitor is a fantastic screen, it looks amazing and the image quality is superb. Well worth the money.

I have chosen the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 because at stock it is rated at 3GHZ which is pretty fast anyway. So you can leave it at stock and games will still fly. If you do want that extra performance out of the processor you wont have any problems overclocking it. Im guessing this will be your first time overclocking but no need to worry, have a read of this , that should tell you the basics of overclocking. How ever if you do have any more questions theirs plenty of people here that are willing to help.

The Tuniq Tower is a superb cooler and will keep that chip of yours nice and cool. At stock and when overclocked.

The Abit IP35 Pro motherboard is a fantastic board. Its one of the newer P35 chipsets which will support Intels upcoming 45nm processors, the Penryn Family. The board it self is extremely reliable and has great overclocking potential. You wont have any problems with it.

The Gelli Skill HZ is fantastic Memory. At stock its rated at 800MHZ, so really it will be plenty faster enough even if you dont overclock it. Though if you do overclock it, it should hit 1000MHZ and above quite easily.
I have put 4GB in for you (4 x 1GB sticks) so you will need a 64bit O/S which i have included anyway, Vista Home Premium. Their are problems running 4 sticks of memory with certain chipset motherboards but these issues are resolved on the new P35 boards so no need to worry about that.

The Western Digital Hard Drives are fantastic drives, very reliable and quite. I have put in 2, 320GB drives for you because you could maybe dual boot Windows XP and Vista. Put XP on one Hard Drive and Vista on the other. So try Vista out and if everything runs fine thats great. If you do experience any problems just boot into XP. Hopefully in a few months most of the issues that users are experiencing with Vista will be resolved. Either way you haven't lost anything since eventually Vista will be the main O/S.

Is everyone still with me, nearly finished.

Now the 8800 GTX is a monstrous card and should go perfectly with the Dell 24inch Monitor. Nothing more to say about the card.

I have also put in a Sound Card for you which will be great if you have some kind of surround sound system. Even if you don't it will be much better than onboard sound.

The Samsung drive connects to your motherboard via SATA which means you can cancel the IDE controller on your motherboard which will help with quicker boot times. Most of all though cable management will be easier and you can get rid of them ugly, big, fat, chunky, horrible IDE cables. :p

Seasonic are one of the best manufacturers around when it comes to PSUs. The M12 Modular 600W Silent is very quite and extremely reliable. 600 Watts is plenty of power for this system and will be enough for any future upgrades.

The Akasa Eclipse is a fantastic case. Great build quality and fantastic air flow.

Well i hope i haven't bored everyone to death but thats my view. :p

Yeah, lots of info to take in, conflicting info, it is hard, but all the feedback is appreciated.

Knives - I've always gone for pre-built Eveshams before but I thought that I would try building my own this time.

I'll look around the web for a few more reviews and then I'll post up my final spec later.

I've seen so many bad specs in this thread. I'm trying to figure out what half the people on here are smoking.

Anyway this is what I'd get. 2900XTs work beautifully in crossfire and can only get better in the future as drivers mature. Throw in Vista 64-bit and you'll see DX10 at it's very very best.

Wait a bit for the Q6600s and this system will be even better value.

This is the best bang for buck you'll get. 2900XTs perform almost as well as a GTX in DX10 and to be honest their performance in DX9 compared to GTXs is meaningless as they'll run any current or future DX9 game at full specs. What matters is DX10 performance now and crossifred 2900XTs is the cheapest way to get the best performance.

Anyway here's the spec:

Irony at its best. :p

Anyone who quotes an 8800Ultra as being good value can go suck my ridges. They are the biggest rip off available. I've got no problem with a 8800GTX. It's almost worth the money you pay for it. But the ultra? Absolutely not.

Would you care to say what you feel is wrong with the spec I posted?
