I never ever give beggars money. To be honest, it seems that the majority of them are already on welfare and just looking for a healthy bit of pocket money. But there are the ones that are obviously down and out, and it's really sad to see.

I was just in the shop to get some groceries. There's a guy that is a true bum, always hanging around the area. He doesn't beg, he just sits in various doorwells looking sad, occasionally drinking a carton of urine. He sleeps in the ATM rooms, which are open 24hrs and heated (I'm in Spain and the banks don't seem to mind)

Anyway, I stopped this time and sat down with him. I asked if he was hungry, which he was, so I made him a ham and cheese sandwich there and then. This guy was genuinely starving and in a terrible state. I would never give a homeless person money because, let's face it, they will most likely spend it on booze, but if I happen to have food with me, I'll donate what I can.

It really is a damn shame to see people living like this.

Anyway, the next time you go grocery shopping and see a tramp, donate what you can from your bag. What goes around, comes around. Let's help eachother out.

Yeap, I never give them money, I always give them food instead.

When McDonalds had that 2 for 1 coffee offer, my sister always used to insist on a second cup to give to a tramp.

I gave a tramp one of my sandwichs when i came out a shop once and he looked at me like i had just given him a turd.

There was a tramp that had a dog with him and my mums work mate whitnessed him hitting it. She reported him and he went ot court, it turned out he had a house!

Obviously there are genuine ones but most in UK are on welfare like you say. The ones in Bangkok i gave money to because they had spend ages making small things out of scrap they found on the streets like cans and rubber. They clearly had nothing at all, same goes for ones in China

i used to give a few coppers in my young naive days, when i was old enough to realise where that money went 99.9% of the time i started to give a bit of food instead, what ever i had if i had any spare i'd give it to some homeless person until i found what i'd given one of them in the bin down the road (and open, on wall sort of thing).

i don't bother giving anything now.

true story.

A mate of mine brought a Big Mac and a Vegeburger from McDonalds to give to a bum just incase he turned out to be a vegetarian... I guess beggars can be choosers in this case :)

Was walking over a bridge when it was absolutely pouring rain. It was an old stone bridge and had a few inches of overhang and some begger, foreign by the looks of him was trying to cover himself under the overhang and with his clothes, he was getting soaked still though so I gave him my umbrella and walked the 5 minutes home in the rain.

I don't give them money anymore after realising it goes on alcohol or drugs most of the time. Generally I just ignore them but this one guy looked so miserable.

I never have and never will give them money.

They ask for money, yet are smoking at the same time? Clearly not THAT desperate for the money are they!

Any spare money they have after buying tobacco will go on filling their veins with class A drugs.

If anything, I would give them food or water.

I was in victoria train station once and a begger came up to me and asked me for some money , for food / shelter etc. I asked him if we was honestly going to spend it on that, to which he replied no. He said he was actually going to buy some weed with it. I decided to give him a pound for his honesty

Never usually give them anything ... although when I was in NY for the first time walking around on my own this guy approached me saying he just got out of prison etc. showing me his prison ID badge/card thing and said he needed $5 to buy some socks.

Luckily for him I had a new pair of socks on me (got them free with trainers I bought) - he looked a bit disappointed, think he would have preffered $5 :p

I would give the guy outside the Sainsbury's Local some food on my way home from work but I pass him every day and would feel guilty not giving something some days - don't want to make a habit of it.
