Giving beggars stuff

When they ask "Any change?" I reply "Yes, but none for you."

I have done this, but mostly when confronted with "Yo, Blud, can I borrow 20p)
like they are ever going to be in a position to pay it back, let alone tack your details in case they might, I prefer honesty from my local hobo.

Fair play to you mate.

Sat with a tramp called Ian for a couple of hours one time. Gave him half my pasty and tenner. Nice bloke, not on the drugs or booze and didn't really beg. Had two kids.

They're people, some of them are ****takers, and some are cool people.

I often feel bad seeing beggars on the street but never really donate cash... It's just something I've never bothered doing. I always have the best intentions of donating a few quid to a decent busker (There are some very talented guys - I guess they spend their day doing nothing else - But unfortunately a lot of people with a flute causing a racket) but it seems I never have change at that time.

When I visit Pizza Hut if I do not finish my pizza I normally ask to take it out and give it to a homeless. In my experience they have always been very grateful.

Likewise, seeing many of the more genuine seeming lot selling the Big Issue get my attention a little more. I always feel bad when you say no thanks and they thank you regardless and wish you a good day. I'm not sure I would be able to act so calmly in their situation.

In a public loo I once overheard a conversation between two 'women', who were deciding whether to steal something, or to beg for the money to get it.
These 'women' turned out two be two girls who couldn't be any more than 15yrs old...

This question has always puzzled me - until I had a chat about it with my mate who was studying to be a social worker at the time. He told me in no uncertain terms that you should not give homeless people money; they have a multitude of state-supplied and charity-supplied help available, and giving them money only funds drink and drug addiction in a large number of cases.

I remember a couple of years ago when I was sat on the floor near my bus stop (all the benches were full and I had been on my feet for the past 12 hours)
some guy dropped a tenner on my lap and said here you go mate take care of yourself and get some nice food.

I will admit for a moment I was thinking of keeping the money but I got up walked up to the guy and gave him the money back saying that I didnt need it he was mistaken ect.
The poor guy must have been so embarressed.

It was quite insulting now that I think about it!!!!

Fool. Who gives back free monies!

Bumfights tbh.

I've seen enough of them at London Bridge doing shifts... one gets picked up in a car and another one takes their pitch.

The only ones I give anything to are the ones asleep in a doorway at 3am.

How hard is it for a single person to get temporary council accomodation? There aren't really that many homeless people I see and so was wondering. Its only the homeless beggars who I'd imagine would find it impossible to claim JSA that I would think are living a life of absolute poverty i.e. no shelter and no food, and obviously need to be helped.

There are many homeless shelters. Most tramps who stay out on the streets do it by choice, therefore I think of them in the same way I think of pigeons that are away from their nest.

If you give them what they want, more will come and more people will bother you as time goes on. For this reason, I never give money to beggars. Similarly, I never feed pigeons either.

I have no problem with buying the big issue however.

Yeah I've given money to a few.

If you don't like giving them money though, why not take them somewhere and buy them food so they don't spend it on drink or drugs or whatever?

**** them. Anyone who wants to, can get help, benefits. If you want luxuries like weed or booze, work for them. That's what I do :D

most are smackheads round here with a myriad excuses, I've been sorely tempted to smash them on many an occasion, but I've seen the same ones scuttling around during the day picking up peoples old cig ends and pocketing them. Not only do i not wish to touch such filthy, base creatures, but i pity them as much as i despise them and one must at least maintain polite manners in company.

not a chance. They look at you in disgust if you over them food/drink. If you were desperate you would gladly take anything on offer. I'm not giving you money to get beer and drugs. Plus I expect many are there through either addiction or arrogance. Not wanting to go crawling home or to friends.

Some people cant depend on friends or family because thats what they are runining away from. My other half used to volunteer for Center Point which is a homeless shelter in London. There were quite a few cases of abused children that were on the run because they didnt want to get traced down hence didnt want to ask family and friends for help.

As to the drink and drugs. I worked in Germany on a building site many years ago, and after a while 4 of us from the UK were ripped off and were not paid our wages for the month so ended up staying on the streets for a couple nights while our agency in Holland came to pick us up. I think people take for granted that you can just go home and watch the TV all day if you have nothing to do. As a homeless person, you dont have that luxury, you sit on a park bench or sit somewhere else in town. I can tell you it was a very depressing situation and can totally understand why homeless people end up on drink or drugs as it is such a totally bleak way of life.
