Glad I'm not a northerner

so because people dont agree it shouldnt be enforced? the law is the law until it is challenged and changed by the appropriate means?

As Lopez said, it's up to the police to enforce it, not a bunch of busy-bodys who (sweeping generalisation here) are probably some of the *worst* drivers.

ADZ -

you are implying that the maximum speed limit is also a minimum speed limit and that everyone shoudl do 70mph regardless? u may percieve the law to work like that. it doesnt.

No I'm not, I'm stating that nowadays the majority of car drivers do drive at a minimum speed of around 65-70mph. This was not the case (at least not to the same extent) when the 70mph speed limit was brought about. If nobody exceeded 70mph on an open road, there would be no differential between the lanes and it would be chaos.

The law is outdated.

What sort of person would actually sign up for this?

I have visions of Dark_Side driving around with a sticker in his window :p
Funnily enough I was behind a car tonight with a red 'SPEED KILLS' sticker in her rear-window. Never seen one before, so I smoked her.

you gotta be kidding.
my 23 mile commute is made up of a 2 miles of 30mph limit, approx 7 miles of dual carriageway with 2 of them being 50 limits and the rest motorway.

i do this in 21 minutes every day so you do the math ;)

if this story is true then it's an astonishingly bad plan.
these people will be setting themselves up as targets for the more unstable amongst us and i'd bet heavily there will be incidents involving injury, damage or maybe even death around these volunteers.

IIRC once you've passed a driver in lane three you're supposed to pull back to the left...now the goalposts have been moved???
asking for trouble IMHO....you can't tell me that someone who has gone through their anger threshold won't follow one of these volunteers home and do something about it?

bad plan,again assuming it's legit.

imho, like any motorway user here would agree, if motorway limit was 100mph and if people actually learned to drive (ie be in the right lane for the speed they are doing and never stay out on the left when the lanes to the right are clear) then there would be less congestion and less accidents. Look at the M25 whenever the limits drop to 50 (gantry cams) because of congestion then u get congestion, whenever its NSL no congestion, odd that. The only reason your ever 'stuck behind' someone on a MW is cos some plonker is going around 60-70 in the outside lane where even my pass plus instructor said you should do 80-90 when passing. Madness
