Gladiator II

I have so much fondness for the first film, this is one of those sequels I'd kind of written off and placed in the "things that never needed to be made" column, and i honestly think a lot of people have done the same. I don't imagine I'm even going to watch it when it becomes available on Apple TV.

PVOD on Dec. 24.
Disappointing tbh. 5 weeks in cinemas, and there has been recent films that made a lot less money and they got a 6 week reprieve before being sent to VOD!

I'm still planning to see this at the cinema this coming week, but off course now there is the temptation to wait an extra week for streaming....

They need to give films longer exclusivity at the cinema, like the old days, unless PVOD is making a lot more money these days (at the prices they charge, I seriously doubt it!)

I preordered it on apple but not sure I even want to watch it. The first is one of my favourite films ever and everything I’ve read about this sequel seems a huge disappointment. Even listening to the soundtrack has been disappointing.

I thought it was alright, not worth a trip to the cinema but if you're bored and it happens to pop up on streaming it might be worth a punt.

It doesn't really do anything new, it's essentially the first movie all over again but worse in every way. I'd give it maybe a 5/10, I imagine it'll eventually at least break even when accounting for streaming/dvd etc sales.

For me the ending didn't make sense at all.

Tbh I think Scott is starting to lose the plot a bit. He's been a bit hit and miss for awhile now, although I'd say more miss as of late.

There was a lot of weirdly thought out and executed stuff in Napoleon too, and his responses when asked about those things were a bit off imo.

I'm not trying to be nasty here, but the guy is knocking on 90.

Was thinking that too. Most would agree. It's beautifully shot but the ideas and writing are lacking. It's like trying to do too much to a masterpiece. Gladiator is a perfect example.

Three of my top five movies of all time are from Ridley Scott, Alien, Gladiator, and Blade Runner.

I know he can do fantastic work, but I honestly don't think he's up to it anymore. I'd love to be proven wrong, and I'm sure making movies is cathartic to him as he's shown no signs of slowing down.

Like you said, he's knocking on 90's door and most people would be slowing down a bit at this point - I'm wondering if he has a quiet competition going with Clint Eastwood to see who can crack out the most additions to their filmography before they shuffle off into the cosmos

Wouldn't it be fair to say that the one thing out of Scott's control would be the cinematography?

That article lends credence to the idea and the observations that theareas that are directly in his control have been slipping in standards. What's interesting to me is something that Red Letter Media and Critical Drinker said of the hollywood system these days - that as opposed to there being forethought into composition and the shooting schedule as little as 20 years ago, the prevailing attitude by the studios these days is to fix it digitally in post...Which is a massive problem in itself.

The thing is he can still have an output but not be in the director's chair - Alien Romulus for example was great with him having a directing hand in its aesthetics and storytelling, and I genuinely believe that the next generation of film makers of any note would benefit massively from his insight and wisdom, even at his advanced age.
