Glasgow - Nicest Areas

Glasgow's crap, don't move there, blah blah blah, you'll get stabbed, blah blah...

Fair enough some people are just joking but sadly people do seem to believe this. Anyway that's their loss as it's an excellent place to live.

What sort of budget are you looking at? If budget isn't much of an issue a nice flat in West End or Merchant City would be my first choices.

It'll be even worse in about five years when Scotland is independent :p !

Ha that's a whole different story. It won't happen anyway, they'll hold a referendum in a few years and it'll get rejected. A vote for the SNP thankfully doesn't translate as a vote for independence.

indeed its not all bad

depends what your budget is and what sort of accomodation your after,

more info so we can recommend you the area your least likely to get stabbed with a broken buckie bottle that you can afford :)

in all seriourness there isnt really a "bad" area of glasgow, more like bad streets if anything these days even the east end has some nice areas for not a lot of money some cracking new builds up in swinton atm that are going for pretty cheap :)

As said, it all depends on your budget really and what you want. - Edit, just seen it. That's a good budget, and will get you a very nice 1 or 2 bedroom flat in Merchant City no bother. I'd go with there if you want the hustle and bustle of city living, close to great bars and restaurants and have a nice flat. If you want a quieter life, then go south of the river. The West End way is nice, probably the most expensive, and is full of students. But there are nice bars, restaurants and everything.
I only really know the city center/east end and merchant city. Someone else can help with the south side and further a field. Though, Bearsden and Milngavie are amongst the two most prestigious areas. Your budget will easily get you somethere there I suspect.

I live in Dennistoun, which is alright. It has a good mix of students and professionals and the obligitory Glasgow scumbags but you'll get them wherever you live. It's pretty cheap as well. But it doesn't really have any nice pubs but then again it is only 10 minutes walk from the city centre.
If I was to move in Glasgow I would be looking at Shawlands. It's cheaper than the West End, isn't full of pretentious muppets and is quite 'up and coming'.
If you can afford it, Merchant City would be up on my list as well. It's right beside the City Center and is full of bars, restaurants and the like. It caters to a older, more professional crowd so you won't see heaps of students throwing up around it.

Glasgow City isn't *that* dangerous, no more than anywhere else I'd say. The crime (which there is admitably a lot of) is generally contained within the schemes (high rise council estates) so as long as you don't live there you should be fine. Easterhouse, Possil, Sighthill etc.

As for the night time safety, Aberdeen is a lot worse and a lot more violent than Glasgow. I've lived in both, and I feel a lot safer walking the streets of Glasgow at night than I do in Aberdeen.

Give us a budget, and what you want near you and we can help further.

I also think we should organise a Glasgow/Scotland meet, in Glasgow so you can come to that.

tl;dr - Check out Byres Road (West End), Hillhead (West End), Shawlands (South Side), Merchant City, Bearsden (bit further out of the city).

West end or the southside. It's actually not bad out here either, it will be a lot cheaper to get a nice flat in a good area in Airdrie or Coatbridge and get a 20 minute train into the town.

Scotland won't be :).

Balliestone is nice enough I suppose if you are bringing up a family, but if it's just him or him and a partner then I imagine he'd want somewhere a bit livelier...

With that sort of budget I'd be getting a very nice 1 or 2 bed flat in the Merhcant City. My budget was £450 and I got myself a reasonable 1 bed flat a stones throw away from the Merchant City :p

Currently would just be my fiancée and myself living there. We are open to either a house outside the centre with around a 30 minute commute or somewhere inside the city near the centre so a 2 bedroom apartment :)

Thanks for all of the advice. I will be sure to check out the suggestions so far!

nice areas?

newton mearns, west end, most of the north of glasgow, such as bearsden, milngavie, lenzie, etc.

places you want to avoid is most of the south tbh.

the best thing to do would be to actually check out the local areas yourself, look at the state of the local area, shops, etc.

best thing to actually do is find where all the peckhams are located around glasgow and get accomodation near there. they are usually only located in nice places

garrowhill this is a 6/7 min walk from garrowhill station pub 200 yards up the road ( not the sort you frequent in the evenings unless you want stabbed though)
and quite a few others 1/2 mile down the road.

and Ahleckz that first one is not in baillieston its Swinton, annoys the hell out of me when letting agencies or indeed taxi punters tell you they live somewhere they dont lol

oh Smit, i can wholeheartedly recommend a decent local taxi driver to you if your needing transport :)

Most areas of the West End are nice. Stay in Hyndland myself and its a great area. Handy for transport as well.

Although tends to be more expensive in the West End. Some areas of the South Side are decent aswell

Seconded.

Hyndland's a great area (there are actual trees and grass and stuff nearby), no scum, right in middle of the west end so plenty decent pubs and restaurants in walking distance, train station and underground both 5mins walk from my flat. Takes me 20 mins from my front door to my office in the city centre in the morning.

As mentioned, it's not a cheap area but you get what you pay for really...

Where are you working? If it's city center/financial district/charing cross then you could live in Merchant City and walk to work. Some very nice flats on Ingram Street. Not sure on the prices, but I imagine you'd be able to afford somewhere on George Square or one of the streets off it. You could live above Jamie Olivers restaurant and go there for dinner each night? ;)

i cant remember being on a night out in glasgow city centre and not seeing a fight tbh, you even see girls fighting inside nightclubs, even saw a guy beating 3 women outside the casino once beside tiger tiger, luckily whenever we go out its always in a huge group, so no trouble looks our way.

I go out two or three times a week, and I can't remember the last time I saw a proper fight. May see some squaring up and what not but very rarely do you ever see fisticuffs.
The only trouble I've ever had in Glasgow (and been here for 6 years) was because of my own actions.
I'm often out with just one other person, and often walk home alone (past the Barras, oh err) and again never had any bother... My friends share this experience.
Where you going to see all these fights? The club in the Savoy? :p
