Glasses wearers, unite!

Can't edit the above as the forum is just giving me a blank window when the edit button is hit ... typo in the above the lenses were actually ~£650 not ~£450 as stated.

Something to bear in mind with your prescription. Over -6 you are more at risk of retinal detachment. Physical activities can cause this, especially jolts to the head, be careful man i only recently found out being -5 and -7 myself.

I had a scan of the back of my eye done last week as a follow up to the injury I sustained. Apparently it all looks very good. Just looked like a picture of the surface of Mars to me, but still.

I've never got the 'trendy/stylish/cool glasses thing. Glasses look bloody ridiculous on anyone. You can spend thousands, they still look daft.
I've worn them since I was 18, and hate them as much now as I did on the first day.

My lenses this time were ~£450, but they are varifocals which up'ed the prices significantly over the previous pair which were only single vision (but screwed by close up viewing due to their strength for distance viewing). The increase was around the £150-200 mark. I would note that my prescription is not only strong but is also defined as being "complex" by the NHS which means I get free eye tests and money towards the glasses (a tiny amount)

Normally at this point someone say to just order them cheaper online but normally the online sites don't go up to this sort of prescription level and they are very sensitive to the fitting of the glasses (my previous pair took multiple visits to get correct).

Same here. I've been given some forms to fill in which should* hopefully entitle me to some discounts. I've been looking at some frames on the SpecSavers website that look quite nice. I'm just hoping that they can be fitted with suitable lenses though.

Ah thats good then. When my optician mentioned it to me in the summer it scared me a lot initially. Tbh, i'm not even sure what we can and cant do. For example, is going on a rollercoaster a no no? I can't seem to find any info.

With that sort of prescription, even if you pay a fortune for super thin lenses, you'll be best off looking at fairly thick framed glasses, as thin frames will look daft.

If you have your prescription to hand, there are online calculators that you can fill with rough estimates of your frame sizes etc. and they'll give an approximate edge thickness.

even with the thinnest lenses that prescription is going to be very thick - definitely try and get some small frames as that will limit the thickness of the edges.
Big frames will mean the edges would be 1cm or more.

With a prescription as yours, larger framed plastic glasses like above are your best bet as they'll hide them jam jar lids better.

Your glasses shouldn't be an issue for downhill biking as long as they are fitted correctly. Don't be afraid to have the pretty girl spend an hour getting the fit right.

Don't pay out silly money for brand name frames either. Most will be made within the same few factories in China no matter if they're specsaver own brand or 350 quid Gucci.

You have to have the right 'look' and head size to pull of half rimmed and rimless. If you're a big beast like me (6'8 27stone), small glasses just don't work.

I can't wear contacts due to my eyes being affected by my eczema. I wear these glasses. Jeff Banks JB20 frames.

Any chance of laser surgery bringing them to a more managable (contat less level?) Perscription?
Problem with laser surgery is it meant to cost somewhere around 5k and may not work, this is just from what I heard..(plus how long do you need to wait ?)

But I never priced it myself..

the opticians won't give you your PD - Pupillary distance - ie the gap between your pupils... you can self measure (or get a friend to do it for you) but mess it up and you'll feel like you're permanently drunk, without any of the positives of actually being drunk!

Specsavers did mine, not as part as of the eye test but back out on the shop floor when I couldn't find any I liked.

-4.25 and -3.75

London vision clinc.

It might not bring such an extreme perscription bsck but might help.

Lvc would be 6k for you iirc for the upper price
