Glastonbury 2023

Someone said the BBC Sounds recording of GnR was better - but having just downloaded it, Axl still sounds terrible :(

Yeah, there's no getting away from that, there were sound issues for sure, which were rectified, and his singing did improve, but still his voice is comparitively speaking shot. Elton was the same, you can't hide that, these are singers that were once great on their last vocal legs.

That doesn't take away from how they once could sing, much less their back catalogue, but particularly in EJ's case that walk down memory lane was a great reminder of the amazing songs he and BT wrote together.

Only goes to show just how good Cat Stevens was vocally and still is.

Rick Astley and Blossoms playing a Smiths set was incredible. Rick Astley probably had the best voice of the entire of Glastonbury.
I'm gutted I skipped this. Watched Manic Street Preachers because my wife wanted to see that.

I was a big Smiths fan, but Morrissey drove me off with his horrible views, but the songs are still great.

I heard Rick Astley was playing with Blossoms but somehow missed it was doing Smiths songs. I've since seen some of it on the BBC and it sounded excellent.

35 years since they split up, none of them actually playing, and yet THE SMITHS were still the best thing on the entire bill.

If that doesn't say everything about the state of modern music then I don't know what would.

;)

Johnny Marr was on stage with Chrissie Hynde for a bit of her set. Still a cool looking dude.
I wouldn't go overboard about Astley and the Blossoms. It was decent but the songs carried it vs the performances. I was slightly perturbed by the teleprompt screen on the front of the stage which appeared to be reminding Rick of the words!

I think you'll find most artists have this!

In fact I was amazed Axl didn't appear to have/need one.

That's pretty much what I meant though, even via a covers ensemble still a highlight of the festival. This is what I have been saying about bands for the last 10 years - they haven't got any songs!!!

Really enjoyed the Blondie set. Debbie Harry's voice has lost that sweet top end these days, understandably, but she's still badass and Clem Burke is still absolutely stunning on drums.
Just catching up with this missed it on the night was a huge fan back in the day nice to see them playing some of lesser known classics such as Will Anything Happen? Miss Jimmy on the keys though and it was his song with Chris Stein not being able to play for some reason thats just two of the original lineup Debs and Clem. And Glen Matlock on the bass well a Sex Pistol finally made it to Glasto lol. He's been Clem's mate for a number of years so when their player of a number of years wasn't able to make it anymore he stepped in. Oh and just noticed her t-shirt CBGB's the legendary New York dive where they started out Hilly Krystal's place closed a number of years ago but nice to see the homage.

Yeah the CBGBs t-shirt was a nice touch. As was the 'deconstructed mirrorball' outfit for Heart of Glass, rather a tongue in cheek reference to the original video I thought. Shame Chris Stein retired from touring, but I thought the new band members made a pretty authentic sound. I watched it back again myself, just to pay more attention to Clem. I'm not a drummer, but if I was this is how I would try to play :)

Saw GN’R in London last night and thought Axl sounded absolutely fantastic… just awesome, like… damn!

So yeah, the Glasto performance we saw on TV deffo had some technical difficulties.

Was looking forward to Carolina Polachek but the mix is completely screwed. The kick drum is completely missing, whole things feels flat.
I thought her set was brilliant tbf. I also really enjoyed Rina Sawayama. Seems to be a lot of great “alt-pop” or however you want to describe it at the moment.

Otherwise I thought War on Drugs, Jockstrap, Young Fathers and QOTSA were great. Elton was the pick of the headliners for me. It was good to see Jacob Lusk from Gabriels up on the Pyramid as a guest as their set has been one of the highlights of the last two years for me. I like GnR but they don’t have the songs to do 2.5 hours.
