BMI is a load of bollards. For a start it doesn't take into account muscle mass. My mate is 17 stone but doesn't have an ounce of fat on him (body builder) and yet according to BMI he is morbidly obese.

I give up. BMI is obviously not accurate for people with high muscle mass. No one's claiming it is. How is that difficult to understand??

Perhaps because it is utterly useless without the specific context of medical reasons.

Things like how much water a person should have, how much blood they can lose without serious problems and so on.

Plus the title says it all.

Totally agree and I know quite a few people like this.

The worst case was a young girl of 14.
At the hospital I used to facilitate a BMI class for 14 to 16 year olds under supervision of a health professional.
The kids did the tests themselves and one girl bought back a score of around 39 and she was not surprised because her GP had told her she was morbidly obese.
Visually this girl looked normal and not the fatty we should expect to see so I repeated the tests.
She actually weighed over 2 stone heavier than another girl who looked exactly like her so I went and got a colleague to repeat the test again but the student said she knew she had heavy bones & muscles and wasn't bothered by it.
My problem was that her GP had told her she was morbidly obese when she obviously wasn't.
In the end I refused to do the class because telling young girls that they have a BMI of more than 1 played havoc with their minds and no explaining of what it meant pacified them.

bmi of 28

57% above the uk and 83% above the rest of the world..

i'm over weight but not sure where i should be as i do actually have muscle..
i lift heavy stuff at work constantly and go cycling 60mile as much as i can.

if i were to weigh 12 stone im not sure that would be too health for me.

Which thus makes it a pointless measurement and certainly not one that should be being used as the 'de facto' measured to compare yourself to others in the population.
