Go on...spec me...

Why limit yourself to a 17"? You could get a 19" or better for just about the same money!

The market will have changed considerably by January so I recommend making another thread like this then. New faster products, especially in CPUs and graphics cards, will be out and prices will be significantly different.

EDIT: Are your current hard disks and optical drives SATA or PATA? PATA is on its way out and most mobos only have one such port. it will effect your motherboards choices if you're adamant about keeping more than two PATA devices.

The reason for only going 17inch is because our office (well girlfriend calls it office, for me it's just where I play games because my PC isn't allowed in the living room) at home is quite small and I have to sit literally about 2 feet from my current monitor which is a 15inch crt, anything bigger and it would start hurting my eyes from sitting so close.

I figure that prices may change a lot by january, but would like a starting point to change and adapt from over the next 2 months, hope that makes sense.

Ummm...I assume PATA, they're definately not SATA, it's a western digital 160GB drive I bought around a year ago. DVD drive is about 3 years old and only 16x

Consider this a baseline:

OcUK's current selection of 17" monitors isn't great and I'm not aware of what's good on the market. I chose this one as it's the only widescreen of the bunch. It should have nice high pixel density and should be very good. It does, however, have an 8 ms response time. I wouldn't bother with a non-widescreen monitor at this point.

If choosing monitors in your position, I'd take the LG L1900R. It has digital input, 3000:1 contrast, and 2 ms response time.

@ BillytheImpaler, cheers for that spec mate, however, i'll need a PSU as well ;)

Also, I should have mentioned, I don't mind onboard sound if it's half decent, my current mobo (ASUS PC4800E) has onboard sound and it's excellent.

Whoops, that's twice in two days that I've done that.

The onboard sound is quite good. I have the LED version of the Tuniq here only because the non-LED version is not in stock. You can choose either one since their performance is just about the same.

if you left out the sound card and dropped to a P35 motherboard (P5K) then you would be able to afford a 22" Samsung gaming monitor such as the 226BW, and a decent PSU (e.g. corsair) for your budget.

I went with the X38 mobo for future proofing (1600 MHz CPU support, PCI-e 2.0) and because it fit in the budget. It's not really a huge deal. If not that board I'd recommend the IP35-Pro.

I'd love a 22inch, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, space is very limited and a big monitor would kill my eyes from just sitting 2 feet away.

What kind of overclock could I expect using that cpu/cooler? It's not a biggie, just more curious than anything.

Jesus, didn't realise they clock so high...out of curiosity then, what would a 3Ghz overclock up to on air, not that I can afford it, once again, just wondering ;)

lol...posted as I was browsing ocuk main site, saw the Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX6850 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) and wondered what the overclock might be like :D

It might be a little higher, but they're essentially the same CPUs. The Q6600 has a 9x multi with a 266 MHz FSB while the QX6850 have the same 9x multiplier with a faster 333 MHz FSB. Think of it as simply being pre-overclocked.

Yes. That's why so many people on forums like these encourage people to overclock their stuff rather than getting ripped off by paying too much, i.e. Don't get an E4500 because an E2180 will do just as well.

Glad I found out that handy little snippet, I was eyeballing the 3.0Ghz version and wondering how much more overtime i'd need in order to get it, now I know I don't need to bother, saved me a load of money mate, mucho thanks :D
