Go sober in October

I'd better not, Coors and IPA sales would take a huge hit in my region. People's jobs are at risk.

Indeed. I don't mind a drink now and again. However I often decline a drink and people look at me as though I have a second head growing out of me. Pretty strange.

Stop hanging out with teenagers/twenty somethings:p
I know what you mean, I work with the above and couple of them ask why I don't drink. But then I work with quite a few girls from an Asian country and they don't care at all, infact they tell me im a good englishman:p

Is this really that hard to enough people that it can be a thing twice a year? If so I think a lot of people need to look seriously at their alcohol intake.

I had a colleague who did this last year who made it seem like the hardest thing she'd ever done, and I just didn't understand it. We work 12 hour shifts 6.30-6.30 both nights and days. Presumably it's not hard to not drink the day before your 06:30 start, or during the day before your 18:30 start. Hopefully most of us aren't going home at 06:30 to crack open a beer, and having done it myself I'm amazed anyone has the energy after 4 12 hour shifts to crack open the beers.

By that rational we spend most of our time not drinking, why is it so hard to further extend that?

You know we live in a drinking culture when going a month without a drink is seen as some sort of accomplishment.

That and the fact that if you don't drink you're not classed as social or you're not enjoying life.

OK people, if that's how you want to live your life and justify it fine but don't try bringing me down with you.....

I did it in January and found it easier than I thought. I do drink a bit though. Mostly socially, but I do drink beer and / or wine of a usual evening.

The first 3-5 days are hardest, after that, it was easy, so long as didn't do the things I normally do, like go to the pub ;), restaurants I found were okay so long as not at the weekend. At the weekend, I found a slightly different atmosphere which made me think about what I was missing. Probably psychological, but I didn't really enjoy it as much as I should. Week nights are fine, quieter and more relaxed.

First two weeks are great. I felt fitter and more energetic, slept better too. Weeks 3 and 4 become a bit of a drag. Diminishing returns.

I've done a 10 days or so without any drink a couple of times since. Certainly is good recovery for those who drink a fair bit.
