God I Hate "Verified by Visa"

Verified by Visa always fails for me. Always says the system is unavailable. I've googled the error message but nobody else seems to get it, and HSBC don't know either. Always have to use the wife's card then BT the money over. Gets annoying.

I got my visa card recently and set up a password. Everytime I had to login it said my password was wrong which I was sure it was not, so I had to reset it everytime to the same pw. It was only after about my 10th reset did I notice the max password penguin of 10 characters, and my password exceeded that each time I set it. So instead of telling me my pw was too long it truncated it without warning!

I think that the "verified by" services are an extremely good idea.
Not least because it was thanks to that I was alerted to an attempted theft from my debit card.
I received an email telling me my password had been reset and that if I hadn't done it I should call my bank.
I called NatWest up and they had decided to decline the £250 purchase of tickets from Eurostar because the password had been reset and then the attempted purchase had been but moments later.

Instead of cash dissapearing and me having to go through the hassle of getting it back - it never went!

I had a password for my NatWest Visa debit and one for my Egg Mastercard.
I simply don't forget my password and think all sites should force their use.

I fail to see how it offers extra protection though, seeing as how it can be reset by putting in your name and date of birth, which is hardly difficult information to find out. If you've got someone's credit card details, you probably have their name and date of birth too :p

Plus it always used to tell me my password was incorrect, even when I KNEW I was entering the right one. Because upon trying to change my password, it told me that password was already in use  at least they've finally fixed that now though.

I've had to reset various verification passwords more times than I can remember because of my sieve-like memory. It always comes at the worst time too, i.e. a drunken purchase, so there's not a hope of remembering, even if I convince myself I will and recite it several times.

My heart sinks when it appears on screen, because I know full well I can't remember it again!

I don't hate the system but I do hate myself for not using the card online for huge periods of time, then forgetting my password and having to create a new one. :(

Damn those banks for making it harder for you to be stolen from!

It's actually more about protecting the card supplier, not the individual. We already have protection but by introducing the extra layers of security then the bank can push back when it is compromised. I won't sign up to these systems for that reason. I don't see why I would want to sign away my protection

no matter how annoying it can be like any security system...you are deep down glad its there

Exactly, it isnt more security for the card holder at all. It is about passing the responsibility of any fraud onto the card holder. Where as previously any fraud found on your card would have to be compensated, now the onus is on you to not let any of those details be compromised and any fraudulent transactions is potentially your fault.

A 4-digit PIN on a screen other people can see you entering is more secure than a signature? The courier companies still find a signature sufficient for tracking goods...

Eh?

You could sign for a parcel as Mr Monkey Pants III and the courier wouldn't care. You're signing to say it arrived. Nothing else :/

I have a card from lloyds I can't use online - funny as I only took it out to use online (better protection than debit card) as it asks for my secret phrase to be able to setup 3d-secure.

I've been into the branch twice to reset this 'secret phrase' and both times someone has messed up the data entry and it doesn't recognise it.

Wish they'd just send me a code for it like they do with cards.

Dial 01702 278270 to talk to Lloyds Clicksafe. They should sort you out. Branches are hopeless!
