God I Hate "Verified by Visa"

I'm impartial.

I do, however, hate the banks that force you to use a card reader to login. Natwest is much more sensible only asking for it if you want to change something (e.g. pay [random Nigerian] £10,000).
Aye the missus gets so ****** with Barclays... needs it to do anything.

Just from the other perspective.

We force people to use verified by visa/secure code to buy from our online store. It protects us from chargebacks and guarantees we fulfill our orders quickly and efficiently as we don't wade through a load of tosh.

It will become a standard tbh, so I don't see it as a problem. People will remember their passwords as they use it more.

I do agree the screens look quite poor.

I hate security features, especially when the company is already liable for the failures... ;)

A 4-digit PIN on a screen other people can see you entering is more secure than a signature? The courier companies still find a signature sufficient for tracking goods...

Its a poor system designed to make people feel safer about shopping online, a bit like the security at airports - lots of show and not much good at stopping determined attackers.

You can reset the visa password with some easily obtained user info like post code and date of birth which if you have been a victim of identity theft or lost your wallet the attacker most likely already has or can easily find out from public records.

All this along with the fact most people use easy passwords or the same passwords you have a flawed system that needs a overhaul.

I've had problems but not with the verified by VISA as such but with companies that don't specifically tell you that they do their banking VIA subsite which I haven't yet accepted in Firefox no script and that such banks will use a java script to process my purchase leaving me with a blank screen and not knowing if my payment went through or not.... now that gets my blood boiling websites who do business should have to state 3rd party company they have used to approve payment.

I don't really see the point of the mastercard one, I've reset the password a couple of times and it only asks me for information that could easily be found out by a determined card thief, DOB, card security code etc.

Indeed, I can see how that would be frustrating.

Our website clearly displays our payment provider is SagePay.

my rod licence from 2 years ago wouldnt let me complete the transaction without adding my card to verified by ...

its terrible im sure they are on comission to get people to sign up for it!

i dont want it, its more hassle than the money it could ever save!

Yes, because anyone can see your signature at any time, but your pin only when it is being entered (bar a hacked terminal). The window of exposure is much smaller.

It's not really so much to protect the customer. 3dsecure transactions cannot be charged back to the vendor, this is why it will become a standard, and why it was invented by Visa/MC.

The reason most banks are switching to Visa is because its much more secure as opposed to Maestro and so on.

Infact, regardless of the card I use HSBC has a authentication thing online as well.

yea but my problem was that the environment agency woudl NOT let me complete the transation without doing it and signing up... i had reisted for so long - but i couldnt afford to not buy my rod licence as it was a sunday morning and i needed it to go fishing that day ... so i was coerced into it, involuntarily.

thankfully im on a new cc now that is not registered.

If you don't want to use the secure system that is up to you. The vendor has taken the decision to protect themselves, as we have done, and surely you don't begrudge us that? If you have moved to a cc that doesnt yet use it, don't expect to wait long until you get your own form of 3dsecure on that too. Visa and MC already have it, AMEX has its own, others will follow.

I (usually) remember my password but what annoys me is that these things never work for me when using Firefox. I have to stop and then go through the process again in IE.

That will be to do with how your FF is set up. They couldnt afford to not have it compatible with FF.

I'm terrible at passwords and security so i set all my pin numbers and online passwords to 1234. It's so easy now!
