Godus Beta

Crowd funding is the best thing to happen in video gaming for years. Developers can actually make the game they want without publisher constraints on money and release schedule.

i can see the benefits to this if im honest with myself but the otherside of me thinks like this.
quiet john sssshh chris arghhh im in a glass case of emotion....:p:D

If paying for beta offends you, do what I do... and not pay for or play the beta. Wait until the game is finished, decide if you want to spend the money, and then enjoy the completed game.

yeah thats what i currently do steampunk :D

bar project cars but sssshhhhhh

TBH, if I'm beta testing, I take it seriously, I play, I send bugs and opinions. If I'm going to spend time and energy improving someone else's product, spoiling the game for myself by playing an unfinished and buggy version, I'm damned if I'm going to pay for the privilege too. The dev should be paying the beta testers, but now they've figured out a way to get all that work for free.

I think it's pretty good for a beta. Needs a bit of polish, better control for landscaping, lots more features, but it's already more fun than attempting to play Rome 2.

For me there are a couple of reasons to pay for a beta: [1] If it's a game you would love to see made then you are supporting it and helping it get made - I kacked Elite Dangerous for this reason. [2] This now appears to be a quite successful model for innovative games to be made. I would rather pay for a beta than be faced with the same standard games. Without the Kickstarter model and without paying for beta's it's less likely that innovation will happen in games.

Question... If I buy this on Steam then is it at a cheaper price than the full game when it's released? Also does buying it allow me to play the full game when released?

No idea what the price will be at launch, I don't belive they've said, though I can't imagine they'd be terribly popular if they reduced it at launch after everyone has paid the current price, I also can't imagine it being more. Plus we know how quickly things can be on offer with Steam.

Yes to your second question though, they have said "When you buy the GODUS Beta in Early Access (available 13th September, 2013), you will get any subsequent updates plus the finished game completely free.

So I've got to a bit of a stale point in the game now, I've got 4500+ followers but I can't advance because I've run out of land to expand to and there aren't any resource chests/cards knocking about. I've bought the cards I could afford to get mining, and then a couple more with the limited gems I could mine to advance a level but... that's it. So all I can do now is reshape the land and grow the population.

Is that it? Another beta limitation, or am I doomed to be forever click harvesting and digging out that silly head?

My population is just over 8500 and I had to create masses of land to get it that high. I can't get any further in the game as there are no chests left and think you can get more cards through mp but have not tried it yet.

If you are bored you can wipe your population out with volcano.

Did anyone else lose a chunk of their population after the update?

I had almost 3000, then after the update I was down to 1800.

Have encountered a couple of other issues.
1. Have abode areas within a settlement but no homes will allow spawning to create the news homes (the settlement statue isn't allowing it either - but does if there is mining to be done..)
2. Not getting any messages to show what I get when I open some chests. I get the noise, but nothing else.

Will have to get onto the Godus forums to report these...

Yep, same as you Stevie. Lost about half of my following, and the chest problem seems to be affecting everyone.

Have you noticed the shrines are underwater as well?

no, not encountered any underwater shrines yet!

Not sure if it's something to do with how they applied the home world changes to an already sculpted landscape. As far as I have been able to see, it looks like the 'merge' has tried to modify the landscape where ever you do not have any houses, possible there are glitches in the process that are not checking suitability of shrine positions?

Yep, I think you've nailed it with that description of the problem. Weird thing is, I hadn't touched the land the shrines sit on. That said if they'd implemented the same level for each shrine (say grid reference zero) and the position was dependant on a variable passed from the existing save that wasn't passed then it would still sit as zero. That's my thinking anyway, but then again I'm no game developer and I've drunk a bottle of red tonight. :D

I restarted my world and haven't had a single empty chest, I suggested on the 22cans forum that maybe this only effects people who kept their existing world and maybe its chests you've already previously opened, but somebody who had restarted said they also had empty chests so who knows.

I also have a couple of underwater shrines, my thinking is that they just don't want us using those yet.

Really happy with this update, if they keep progressing like this its gonna be great, and very impressed at the way they've listened to feedback.

Yeah that must be annoying, I'd not played that long myself and quite liked a fresh start.

I am thinking though, do I really want to play this each time its updated. I think I'm kinda spoiling it for myself and it would be much more fun if I just waited for the final release.

Totally with you on that, I'm wondering now if it's just worth sitting out 3-4 updates and then playing once they're just in to the stable adding content phase instead of wiping out maps each time they update.

See if anything turns up on the 22Cans/Steam forums, but I doubt it will until the next update. 22Cans seem to be quite receptive to feedback so hopefully they'll stop nuking games each time!
