GOG , Good Old Games - Official Thread

Ultima 8 featured “a closer blend of fantasy and reality than ever before--real-world physics and game play” (that’s from the game box!) including platform running at several speeds, jumping unto stepping stones and transverse cliffs, walking on ledges etc. Also, Avatar is left alone, without any RPG companions, and that makes the game extremely difficult, while most of the enemies are both extremely hard to kill and extremely deadly. The graphics are flat-out gorgeous in their retro glory, and the well-detailed fluid animations hold up greatly even today after 18 years from release. The combat is a real change from the usual Ultima fare, with great fluidity, and tons of actiony goodness that make this game a great entry title into the series for fans of more action-centric RPGs.

Wow, fair play to the guys at gog for the apology they didn't owe anyone on the botanicula fiasco.

That fiasco and it's blame should be put firmly at the feet of the people that own the game. If anyone deserves an apology, it's gog themselves. Assuming they didn't know this was on the cards.

That said, if people are interested in actually supporting the game they would have paid the asking price, if cheap was the only concern then it's technically free anyway.

Gog has lost it's charm

I don't agree, their releases are still of the same quality (though the game itself may not be that good), ie. the assortment of bits and bobs, the one price to rule them all, support for newer OSes (though obviously in this case that's not a big deal) and no DRM. So they're not only releasing old games any more, this was always going to happen, they had a niche and somewhat limited market and, like all good businesses, they sought to expand, in their case there really was only one direction for that expansion.

Indeed. No DRM is the best part.

Good god that's an amazing game!!! Still have the big box original version from 1999 (with its half price xmas sale at virgin megastore for £15 sticker on it) and the sold out software double pack for the expansion (that I never got too).

Cracking it out tonight to see if I can remember the cheats to jump to where I last played up too ;)
