Thanks for the advice. Although we are only camping in a large forest in Tamworth! The guy im going with is an ex Navy Seal. Let me rephrase - the only reason im going camping in the rain at this time of the year is because im going with a ex Navy Seal!

Should be good fun i think :D

Thanks for the advice those who took it seriously.

You know I think your Ex Navy Seal friend might have the best advice for camping.

However in saying that this guy did spend his professional live in cold water so I would take extra layers.

If you are hiking do not buy anything heavy. Super Noodles and beanfeast are your friends. Take bog roll if you are not camping near toilets.

Yea i would have thought wait till sumer as I would think you will have more fun and a nicer time, or just go now and summer and see which you like most :)

Have fun. :)

Why are you going camping? If it's just to go camping I wouldn't bother - go in the summer when you have some daylight and can sit outside with a few beers.

If your going for other stuff (walking / whatever) then look up a good pub in walking distance of the camp site - although proper planning would mean your campsite has a good pub anyway.

This pub will give you breakfast, sandiches for lunch if necessary, a good meal and copious amounts of beer.

The tent - you will sleep in, everything else the pub shall provide.

bend your left arm at the elbow and place your left hand on your waist

bend your right elbow with your lower arm going upward and allow your wrist to go limp

wear a pair of tight trousers and a white vest and swing your backside as you walk

grow a moustache

you won't get much camper than that :p

:D :D

If you're going with an ex-SEAL, you could dig a trench and sleep in that and get local farmers to take pot shots at you, just for old times sake.

I actually actioned that out to see what I'd end up with. My flatmate just looked over at me with an expression of fear.
EDIT: The wrist part, not the trousers or the moustache.

I do worry about some folks  :D

BTW , we need pics :p

I hope, really hope, your not going serious walking with new boots...

If you have the money go and buy yourself a head torch. They are worth their weight in gold when you are trying to do stuff round the campsite at night.

Beren has a good point about the new boots. You're supposed to wear them for ages before going on any serious hikes.

My current pair of walking boots ripped my feet to shreds for the first few walks. Fit like a glove now though. Honestly think I will be heart broken if anything happened to them :p They're like your fave pair of underpants... uhm.. nevermind.

The one tip that springs to mind, is if you're taking some matches with you, dip most/all their heads in candle wax and allow to set.

Should they get wet, you'll still be able to light them.

Good tip!

Oh and take loads of bin liners, good for sitting on if it's wet.

If you dont have wax, put them in a film tub [those black plastic tubs]. The lids are usually very tight fitting and ive had one underwater for 20 minutes with no water getting in

Last November I went camping with a few guys off of these forums.

After 2 nights most of us were pretty ill from the sheer cold!

Depends on the boot - most modern gortex boots (berghaus, hi-tec etc) will be fine from day one.

Wear good socks though, I spend £60 on a pair of boots and £15 on a pair of socks.
