Going from a 360 to a PS3

like what?

What do you pay for that you wouldnt get on the PS3 for FREE?

and don't forget, if you have say a wife and 2 kids and they also want to go onto LIVE with there own user name, you will have to have a separate paid subscription for them all (MS certainly know how to rip you off)

3 usernames = 3 subscriptions. Common sense, and how the majority of things work. If your kids want their own username, then tough!

Cross game voice chat, parties and cross game inviting are the three big ones that jump to mind. They're all features the PS3 is more than capable of but are rarely implemented, some titles have some of these features but they're few and far between, the 360 has these features integrated into the OS so all online games support them.

simple enuff to msg cross game on Ps3
also cross game inviting? is that the same as inviting from outside the game or what? Ps3 can do that fine.

Only area 360 is ahead is the voice chat/headset thing and trust me that isnt as great as its made out to be.

This is why i dont get why MS have the balls to charge people to play online (most full price games). Is there dedicated MS servers for all MS games? e.g. Gears 2 is there dedicated MS servers for that or is it player hosted (on their connection)
If its player hosted then how can MS ask you to pay them?

edit: i do think the OP should keep the 360 though - its not really worth selling.

I'd keep the XBox (coming from a PS3 owner)

Both have their advantages and I don't feel that it'd be worth the money to change - they're both pretty much the same.

Plus points for the PS3 IMO are Bluray, the inbuilt web browser and some exclusives like Uncharted and Heavenly Sword.

I hardly think Home is worth mentioning as a PS3 selling point just yet. I've not been able to get on it once since it launched on Thursday and I've tried several times every day since then. It's a joke right now - not even worth of being called beta if the vast majority of people can't even connect.

In a few months that will of course change, but it's not really even worth mentioning right now if you ask me :) Completely agree with everything else you mentioned however.

just keep trying and you should get on (normally takes me upto 10 go's or so) and it is beta (free) don't forget. great when you get on, i was walking around the plaza and they have these big screen and one off them was showing the redbull aeroplane races (something i don't think 360 would be able to do). loads of people dancing and talking to each other. Sony are right when they say it will sell systems.

You can DANCE? I'M SOLD!!!! :D

simple enuff to msg cross game

Cross game voice chat and cross game messaging are completely different things. To pause a game and type a message isn't as good as just being able to have a chat with someone. However, rumors are this feature is planned in a firmware update for the PS3, i hope it's true.

I agree its there in some games on the PS3, but not many. My whole point is xbox live supplies all of these features in all games as its part of live whereas on the PS3 its down to the developers to provide it.

Only area 360 is ahead is the voice chat/headset thing and trust me that isnt as great as its made out to be.

I very much like it, as i say i often play on a 360 and i really like how it just feels... busier.

As for the pay to play malarkey, it is in my and many other peoples opinions the best online service supplied among the current set of consoles which in a way justifies the extra cost. When the PSN equals it (which it will, one day i'm sure) then MS will either have to pull some new ideas out of their sleeves to justify the cost, or make it free.

and the fact that each user in the household all using the same console have to pay a separate sub is in yours and many other peoples opinions.. a justifiable cost? or do you just gloss over that little fault?

They don't have to do though do they? They just have to if they want separate user names, i often play online with my friends account. If i were to have a problem with that then i would also have to complain about the PC games that only allow one account to be registered for each game, then i would have to buy a whole new game if my friends family wanted to play online with a different user name. It's not only xbox live that does this.

As an analogy; if you have a mobile phone, you pay a monthly charge to use a phone number. If your wife and kids want to use the same handset with their own number(s), they would need to pay their own monthly contract for their own numbers.

Xbox Live is the same. It REALLY isn't an issue though - if that is the only fault you can fling at Xbox Live then it must be doing something right.

and the point is that on PS3 they can at no cost at all. my wife and kids want to get there own trophies for the games they play, they could not do that on 360.

i could care less how it works on PC, this is about MS charging for LIVE and Sony not charging at all. i.e. it is just another thing that PS3 does better and a reason to own one.

but it does not work like that. Sony don't charge and MS do. no analogy can be used, one is free and the other is not. if i wanted to get the same out of LIVE as i do on PS3, it would cost the family 5 subs.

you say it is not an issue, paying 5 subs on 360 would REALLY be an issue for me.

as for the only fault with LIVE.......
never said it was a fault or the only one, i was just pointing out the PS3 does not have that extra added cost.

Well this certainly turned in to a lively debate.

I think I'll keep my 360 console and probably trade in or eBay my old games, keeping some for a blast every now and again.

What's the demo service like on a PS3? Easily downloadable and accessable?

Are there different PS3 consoles? If I take the 360 for example you have the basic, premium, elite. Through those 3 you have different spec machines, is there a 'top spec' PS3?

What price should I expect to pay and should I wait until after Xmas? What can I get in a bundle? - essentially, what comes in the box? HDMI?

Obviously no competitior mentions or links please, just prices and games.

They charge because they can get away with it, people want to play online and the only way is through them - you can't really blame them, people are willing to pay so there's easy money to be made.
Microsoft can't even justify the cost themselves, if they could they would never have had to drop the fee's from the Windows side of Live. The only way the fee for Live is getting dropped is if they were to suddenly have a significant drop in subscribers (or a lack of subscribers, as in the case of the Windows users).

They should make basic online gaming free for all, but charge for additional services (such as cross game chat, advanced rank based match making etc), in my opinion.

You pay for Live because it is a better service. I don't think most people have an issue paying £30 a year for such a good service.

What I was meaning about "not an issue" is that if you all wanted your own usernames - why should you expect MS to give away subscriptions? You really don't need your own username - could easily create a XYZ_Family account and just use that.

As for PS3 versions, from memory (in the UK) there are:

- 60GB Release Version (backward compatible, 4 usb ports, memory card reader, SACD playback). No longer made

- 40GB Version - 2 usb ports, not backward compatible, no memory card reader, no SACD playback. No longer made

- 80GB Version - replaced the 40GB. Same features but larger hard drive

- 160GB Version - additional version. Same features as the 40 and 80GB versions

never said it was a fault

or do you just gloss over that little fault?

The fact of the matter is, what you are classing as a fault of a live gold sub is just the common occurrence when you pay to subscribe to or pay for anything. The fact you can create several accounts on the PSN for free is simply that, it's free. It's an advantage of the PSN yeah, one everyone knows of. Its common sense that when you pay for something like this it will be limited, to expect it to be otherwise doesn't make much sense

I can't believe people still waffle on about this. Xbox live for £25 a year is absolutely **** all. It's such a minuscule cost it makes barely any difference that the opposition does the same thing for free.

You would be surprised how many people would be swayed by that measly £25 a year fee, me being one of them!
