Going from a Kindle paperwhite to an Oasis - anyone done it?

I’ve got a Kindle Paperwhite which I use a lot and love but I don’t love the touchscreen so use a stylus to avoid getting fingerprint/grease marks on the display.

I see the Kindle Oasis has page turn buttons, just like my original Kindle Keyboard.

Has anyone gone from the Kindle Paperwhite to the Kindle Oasis? What do you think of the Oasis compared to the Paperwhite? Is it an upgrade worth making?

/edit - Update 14/03/2022 - For the latest, click here. I did replace my Paperwhite with an Oasis

My wife upgraded in the Black Friday deals and she feels it’s a great upgrade. Bigger screen size and adaptive light stuff she enjoys particularly. She prefer the shape and how it feels weight wise in hand too. I think with a trade in discount from an old one we had lying around and the Black Friday deal it worked out at £95 or something silly and was a steal for that

I’ve had every paperwhite from the first one and I’ve never had that problem. It’s just not the type of screen that picks up prints

I use a voyager which has similar buttons and love it, never really used a standard Kindle much except when setting up one for friends/sorting stuff out for my dad but I really do prefer the buttons to "touch the screen" for page turning.

I bought my other half an Oasis for Christmas and she’s happy with it. Good design, still has touch screen obviously but the buttons make for a better experience. The screen flips with orientation (left/right hand) too which is handy.

Not very, but even the slightest touch on the Kindle screen leaves a mark.

That's strange. I haven't ever put a screen protector on mine but I've never had a single issue with fingerprints in maybe 5 years that I've had it. I wonder if the screen needs cleaning - maybe the grease is on the screen and you're distrurbing it?

Same, never had a problem with fingerprints or grease, and the matte style helps on that regard.

With regards to upgrading; not really worth it from a cost perspective since it’s the same DPI and internals (mostly) (and depends on your current model), but if the screen size, adaptive lighting and physical buttons are important then go for it. They often have sales on their own brand stuff.

Had a paperwhite 4GB a few years ago and up graded to a Oasis 32 GB for the extra storage
Cant say i have noticed a lot of finger prints .Yes if you hold it up to the light just right i can see them but not in normal use
Battery life on the oasis is **** poor compared to the paperwhite i found.

Slightly tangential but was the upgrade from Kindle Keyboard material? I have one that is about.....god....very old now. And I'm hoping to start reading a lot more again. I have never used any other Kindle product.

We have Kindle OG's with the keyboard, a paper white, and an Oasis (latest gen), also Nook's and another random e-reader. The Oasis is by far my favorite to use, the resolution is way better for easier readability, the form factor is better, the screen light is much better and can be fully adjusted in color temperature, it is just nicer. If you read a lot then imo it is worth the cost. Although I got mine from Argos with like £75 off, so it was a bargain.

It depends on how old your Paperwhite is?

I went from an older Paperwhite to the Oasis last January. For holding it and reading, I found the Oasis a massive jump over the Paperwhite. It was much closer to reading a book than the Paperwhite I had. The extra weight where the buttons are makes it feel like you are holding an actual book and, to me, it's much more intuitive to press the button to turn the pages than touch the screen.

Because of the way that buttons are situated, the ease of use and comfort factor will depend on your hand size.

The disadvantages are that it isn't as portable as the Paperwhite and the battery doesn't last nearly as long.

However, I love mine and wouldn't go back to Paperwhite now. If I lost it or it broke, I would buy another Oasis.

EDIT: just want to add, I never had a problem with finger prints or anything on my paperwhite or Oasis.

Thanks to all for the replies, no I don't have especially greasy or dirty fingers but I notice even the slightest mark on a screen. After a week or so of owning the Paperwhite, I could see marks at the point I was tapping the screen and bought myself a stylus which I've used ever since.

The only reason I bought a new Kindle was because the navigation pad stopped working, I think it was the centre button, the most important of the lot. I stripped it down, gave it all a good clean but it was still the same. My Kindle Keyboard is also the 3G version so it was dead handy.

Mind you, I really like the light on the paperwhite, it just makes it so much more convenient than having to rely on a decent light source.

How poor? I normally use mine for 30-60 minutes in bed most evenings and it lasts for weeks.

I bought it on 11th April 2020. It's not quite the current model but I think it's the previous one. "10th Generation WiFi waterproof" so not the cheapest base model.

Mine is also the Keyboard 3G version, which is surprisingly still working. which I've just read will stop working sometime this year  which may or may not still work, the article I clicked was clickbait talking about 3G in its entirety being shut off.

Anyway, thanks - mine is on its second screen and working great but has been on the shelf orders of magnitude more than it has been used, that's for sure. I like the idea of the backlit one but really need a warm temp. screen for it to work.

The new ones have a 'warmth adjustment' which also attracts me to the Oasis. I use the Kindle app on my phone and always have it set to the lighter brown background rather than white.

I use mine roughly that amount per day and it lasts weeks for me. However, YMMV, a lot will depend on what you have the backlight set to. I have mine set to the lowest brightness and warmish tone. I sometimes turn the brightness up depending on where I am reading.

My Paperwhite was from 2016/2017. Not sure how big a difference there is between that the 2020 model, but, when I do turn up the brightness that the Oasis has a much more even light than the Paperwhite. The uneven light on the paperwhite can look like smudges.

But, how good it sits in my hand and the ability to set the warm tone is worth the upgrade to the Oasis in my opinion.

I bought my Dad an Oasis for Christmas, who always said that he prefers reading real books over any Kindle and never wanted one.

Well, took the chance and bought one for Christmas. Since this time he has taken to it like a duck to water. Agree the battery life is shorter (I am still using my non backlit 4th gen which last weeks!) but now on the hunt for a Kindle Oasis when they next have a sale.

I bought the leather cover, whilst its nice, way overpriced. Taking it out the box it was already scratched during packing/shipping. If you like your cover to already look worn when its brand new, and further pick up a patina then you'll like the cover.

Re battery life
I use mine a few hours a day(especially during this pandemic ).99% in the house and i would say i get about 3-4 LN books before it hits around 20% ....maybe
on my old paperwhite i think i was getting double this (uncertain)
BUT i found that with wifi on i was getting around 4 days maybe on the oasis but the paperwhite seemed to last 2 weeks on `standby`
TBH i only got the oasis cos i wanted more storage for books and 4GB was not enough anymore :)
Yeah oasis is cold to hold unless you get a cover,as i did straight away
