GOING SILENT

I don't know as yet to venture into watercooling but how come then you see people with comments along the lines of "PC is so quiet now can barely tell it is on" Maybe at idle though but under load I cannot see water cooling being louder than a top end HSF and graphics card. As I said though I don't know this but presuming this to be the case.
It's all relative, for overclocked i7's watercooling will probably be quieter, but for underclocked i3's, aircooling will probably be quieter.

Passive cooling is where it's at though, no fans and if you use an SSD also, no noise whatsoever.

I found that with my F1 also, while it can't quite get rid of the spinning sound, it virtually eliminates seek noise.

I ask where you got those black things that go between the bolts and the elastic? Or what they're called?

They're called cable p clips.

I got the p-clips off the auction site about 18 months ago, I think they are 3mm. The cord is called bungee cord and that size is 4mm I believe and it is very strong. They have it in Black, Red, Blue, White but not Orange.

Thanks, I've ordered some now, they should work a lot better than zip ties which is what I'm using right now... I have plenty of shock cord though, B&Q sell it by the metre and it comes in handy for loads of things...

I use too go the silence route but in summer and my small box microwave room made things very hot, in the end im just gonna get a heatsink that can take a nice 140mm fan in fact ill get a case with 140mm fans and just have them run on slowest speeds, ive changed all my hdds to 2tb WDs and there very silent also.

It can get pricey but at the end of the day your gonna need some airflow, best to even replace the graphics card with a passive heatsink and a 140mm attachment fan:)

Need to get a Corsair p/s with 140mm silent fan also...

Im also considering moving the entire PC to another room and get usb extentions to control keyboard/mouse and a long hdmi cable to my tft/tv, that way I have no heat or noise in my room peroid. If you got an empty cupboard or hallway or room spare, id say thats the best bet, im still gonna get my pc silent with 140+ silent fans and then still move it :)

i love the HDD trick.

definately going to try that

just 1 question, did have to use special screws, or will the standard hdd screws be fine?

The standard screws are fine. The standard screws are always a little longer than necessary to allow for drive bay thickness. The p-clips add a little to this but not enough that it causes an issue. I was able to screw these down very tight. It was tricky working against the elastic cord, especially on the second side, while trying to get the screw started but once it does get started it just flies in.

You can also you flat elastic - about £2 from a department store/haberdashery
Here are two I've done in the past - no need for screws at all.
but the elastic must ne tight to stop any movement.

Tightening cross

Used a GUP too - very nice, even make a raptor quiet (not silent, but almost)
so much better that the silentmaxx

Even used a watercooled enclosure - nothing like adding mass (copper blocks) and isolation (enclosure) to reduce noice

Moved on to ssd's in Raid now to remove the moving parts - data store on hhd in the GUP
Passive water loop, single fan build
