Hi there,

I am off to look at two cars today:

Ford Fiesta Zetec
1999 T Reg
1.2L
Price - £2600
Insurance - £2135

Renault Clio RT
2000 W Reg
1.2L
Price - £3400
Insurance - £2280

I saw them both yesterday when on a mass search for cars around liverpool, but it started to snow and we had looked at loads, so I am going back today to have a closer look at these two.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of either cars?

Cheers

Ouch, that insurance seems high. Have you tried putting one of your parents on as a named driver? Who are those quotes with?

They are with tescos who at the moment seem to be the cheapest, I have tried atleast 17 other insurers, these beleive it or not are the cheapest quotes, they are 3rd party ft and they even include a 20% discount for pass plus.

17 year old male living in a part of liverpool that is usually on fire....not good.

Edit liverpool lad, im just on the boundry between kenny and west derby, comes under an L12 post code.

try confused.com :)

I gave that ago as one of my first ones, didnt throw up anything special for me though. The tescos was the cheapest on there, even without the pass plus discount.

So the quotes above are 20% less than the best confused.com can provide and they are still pretty high.

CIS were cheap for me when I started driving, tried them?

Thats one I missed, I'll get right on it

Just tried something different, just tired puting my dad down as the policy holder and me as a named driver........£980!!

Problem there is though that I am obviously not building up any no claims during that time.

Are there any insurers that allow you build up a no claims discount whilst being a named driver?

Cheers

Time to put on your teflon suit mate, its time for our regulars to grill you :D

Just do the named driver thing for a while, even with no no claims once you are 21 you will get cheap quotes.

Technically wrong, yes....but for those premiums i'd do it anyway

Have you tried keeping yourself as the main driver, and adding your parents as named drivers?

My parents use my car every so often, so I did that on mine - adding my dad made a little difference to the price (£20 cheaper, off a ~£1000 quote), but adding my mum brought the quote down by ~£500 - yep, 50% off! This means that my folks can (and do) drive the car under my full insurance cover, as opposed to their TPO drive any car cover (which is expiring soon anyway), and it worked out cheaper.

But please don't go down the "going as a named driver under your dad's policy, when it's actually your car route". It's not fair on the rest of us who did it properly, let me explain. There's a reason insurance is so high for young drivers - statistically, they crash a lot, so the insurance companies have to pay out lots. If all the young drivers are cheating the system like this, not paying enough premium, and then crashing and needing a payout, premiums for everyone else have to go up to cope with the shortfall in money.

I tried adding my dad to my policy and it went up by about £30, will try adding my mum aswell or on her own and see what that does. Might need to shop around a bit to get the money off but they both have 5 years no claims and have driven for donkeys years so if you could get that discount then there must be something similar out there for me?

Who was that with?

Not really had any dealings with either of those car's so I can't really help there (other than looking for the usual knocks and marks). IIRC Admiral have started a named driver policy whereby the named driver also accumulates ncb. Seems a mockery of the whole idea of ncb to me, but see what they are charging for this.

Of course, unless you tell the insurers that it's your car insured under someone elses name, and they agree with it, you may as well save your money and not insure it at all, seeing as the end result is about the same.

Direct line will let named drivers build up NCB for use with them, although they will normally insist (as will most insurers) that the policy holder is also the main driver....

I'm not going to get all self righteous about the evils of cheating your insurers but, if you start building your NCB now, by the time you're 20 you'll have 3 years NCB and can insure pretty much anything you like within reason.

Also, I believe Norwich Union still offer a hefty discount for Pass Plus (although not quite as much as the whopping 48% I got when I was in your position!). Their premiums are generally good anyway if you have a 'normal' car like the ones you're looking it.

A good friend of mine has been insured on his dad's policy for the past 3 years and, while it seems a good idea at the time, he certainly regrets it now!

Ok then, I might forget about my dad taking out the policy. Because at the end of the day in 4years time when I come out of uni, get a job and want a new car, something a bit more special I am going to need the 4 years no claims to get it.

48%?? How did you get that? Surley it wasnt for pass plus alone?

Norwich union used to offer a 48% discount for pass plus. I used it when i was 17 (3.5 years ish ago), was rather good and meant i could get my group 16 car insured as soon as i passed :)
