I stay vegetarian because of the animal cruelty involved and I don't believe in it.
no, you've been programmed by your parents to be a vegatarian. No different to being raised with religion, it would be unlikely you'll give up that religion.

Unlike most religions, vegetarianism has a wealth of evidence to back it up. On the animal cruelty issue alone I could flood this thread with evidence probably starting at "broiler chickens".squiffy said:no, you've been programmed by your parents to be a vegatarian. RoachycaL said:I havent been "programmed" by anybody thanks. I grew up that way and I have been told several times that just because I have grown up that way dosn't mean I have to stay that way. However I remain the way I am because that's what I believe in. All of my mates eat meat but they respect that I dont.
Take it to SC and I'll meet you there. I'm more than happy to discuss animal cruelty in the meat industry anytime you like.D.P. said:And I could flood the thread with evidence that shows there is no cruetly in most farm raised animals. Endless studies show that cows, lamps and most pigs etc lead happy stress free lives

A little, possibly, but nothing near the amount most people here in the west eat.

"Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher occupational social class and to have higher academic or vocational qualifications than non-vegetarians" - I've been a vegetarian since the age of 10/11, and have been lacto-ovo vegan for a few years now

No wonder you're so adamant about eating meat. : )

We always called my brother and law and sister in law the 'The Modern Parents' from the VIZ annual. They decided that their first born would be a veggie like them and when he was about two there was obviously something very wrong with him. After going to doctors and onto consultants they got to the bottom of the matter and it had been his diet. They told them that they can deprive themselves of whatever they want but if they don't feed him properly the authorities would be called.
14 years on and Andrew is still 'not all there' but his three younger sisters enjoy a McDonalds now and then and more amazingley, so do their parents. These aren't people off a council estate but the father is a professor and the mother has two degrees.

what I'd like to know is that you say that this chap has been programmed by his parents to be vegatarian but are'nt you infact programmed to eat meat by your parents and by the majority of society, why has he been programmed and you have not ?, it is much harder to be a vegetarian than it is to be a meat eater, many people choosing to become vegetarians these days come from meat eating familys, why do they choose to take the harder route ?
I'm sorry but you can't blame someone for being mentally ill due to being on a a well balanced vegetarian diet, I guess all people that are mentally ill on a meat based diet then have the meat to blame ?, I think you are really reaching out on this, obviously there was more to this story than what is being told, a local GP is not going to call the Authorities in for putting a child on a vegetarian diet.
There is thing that I'd like to say, both my parents and my sister eats meat, I choose not to, I truly believe in my heart it's wrong, I only have to close my eyes and think about it and there’s just something inside that says it so, not in words but in feeling, people on here say that vegetarians are always preaching and that they shouldn’t be allowed to do so b-cos this is a world where by you are free to do what you want (within reason) and we have no right to judge, well I for one will never stop preaching what I believe is true in my heart and soul, if everybody did that then this world would be a sorry place,
when I close my eyes I see that the majority of western society are getting over weight due to meat eating, parents and loved ones dieing early due to this and causing family units to breakdown, I see hundreds and thousands of acres of the Amazon rain forests (Known as the lungs of the world) being cut down to make way for GM crops to be grown and sold to cattle ranches, I see innocent animals being slaughtered every day to feed people that can live healthily on a vegetarian diet but choose not to out of ignorance and laziness.
I am in the minority I know that, I shall be criticised and shunned for what I beleive in, which is a world free from this archaic savagery of flesh eating that supposedly does no harm to the planet or ones self.
MetalStorm said:No, that is incorrect, you are programmed to eat mean through EVOLUTION, however we as humans are Omnivores and hence have teeth for eating both MEAT and VEGETATION.
We have also evolved brains to enable us to choose our actions, which includes what we eat.

You could, yes, but that doesn't have any bearing on whether or not your evidence would be correct. I don't think normal broiler chickens in cages, as you normally see them in photos, is either correct or humane, but research a lot of the rubbish spouted by animal rights people is simply plain wrong. People saying 'give the chickens space to live' are fundamentally misunderstanding the needs of the birds. Research by Oxford for the government has shown that even in a large space, chickens will crowd and tend to only use the areas closest to the walls for feeding. Density of birds per m2 is not decreased at all. Building a large barn (yes, I'm exaggerating, but making a point) is completely pointless and will not improve the living standards of the birds.phykell said:Unlike most religions, vegetarianism has a wealth of evidence to back it up. dmpoole said:Only yesterday dinner time Jeremy Vine had a doctor on his program who was talking about this very subject. She said one child that came in was orange because of its vegetarian diet and they too had to warn the mother to feed it properly. I missed the rest but it was all about veggie kids.
