If I were playing I'd collude with the other contestants and force everyone to all sign a contract saying we will split. If anyone refuses then I ain't playing.

As said this is just a game show based around prisoner's dilemma. From the maker's point of view they will almost always opt to steal, so payouts should be modest. It's quite a fun concept. Quite how this is daytime fodder while dross like red or black hits primetime I will never know.

If the answer is Ant and Dec then I want off this planet.

The money being paid and raised from advertising makes red or black primetime ;)

With Golden Balls the best tactic would be to steal because you will either get nothing or all of it, if you share you will either get half or nothing and you aren't going to see the other person again. You are individuals in that case.

On Big Brother though who did the same thing the best tactic was to split because you aren't really individuals but both house mates who will have a rapport and have to carry on living with each other afterwards. If one person opts to split it means as a pair you will definitely get all of the money between you and if they opt to steal you can spend the next few days guilt tripping them into giving you half or some of the money.

Advantage to stealing = You have the same chance of winning some money only stealing will ensure you get double.

Advantage to splitting = The 'house' (to use a Casino term) must payout to someone.

So whether you should split or share is dependant on the format and situation of the game you are playing.

Surely over time the best method would be for everyone to split. This way the most amount of profit is generated.

Obviously it's about individuals though and people are generally greedy and you can't trust them so I guess I would steal.

More like primetime commands more money regardless of the programme being made. The only reason Red Or Black gets the prime time slot is because it's made by Syco who have a bit of a stranglehold over ITV because of the popularity of the X-Factor.

Red or black is just stupid to anyone who knows about probability theory because each contestant has the same chance of winning via a simple raffle which would take a minute to do rather than go through round after round of 50/50 choices and spread the same probability over the course of an hour.

Red Or Black is prime time because it rakes in the ratings. If it didn't, they wouldn't have it on. It appeals to the same people that watch shows like the X-Factor because it is unintelligent, easy watching, time-filling garbage that takes no effort to watch. It's the fruit machines of TV. Literally. Those banners are extremely colourful for a reason, as are the lighting and studio sets, the dramatic audio. Everyone knows it is rubbish, but look.. it's so shiny.

Ant and Dec have discovered the lowest common denominator for television shows and are reaping in the cash. They aren't even milking it dry yet - there is worse to come I'm sure.

This is not a reflection on the type of person that watches it. They are not necessarily unintelligent, but many people just like to switch their brain off and simply observe "stuff" on the screen in front of them.

It rakes in the rating because it's primetime, not the other way around.

It has never been on in any other slot so how many people would watch it if it were on at 4 in the afternoon in a mystery. Likewise, if Golden Balls was given a primetime slot it's ratings would rise massively.

Claptrap. There are 300+ channels to choose from, yet Red Or Black consistently pulls in more ratings than the others. They consistently get 20% of the viewers, and that is nothing to do with it being on in "prime time" and everything to do with "more people want to watch this than any other show".

Unlike the prisoner's dilemma, if your opponent steals then your switching from split to steal does not improve your position. Stealing results in a weak Nash equilibrium.

Having said this, the only way you can take any money home is if your opponent chooses to split. Two machines playing each other would never win anything as they would always steal.

If you can't see that the terrestrial channels and the primetime slots don't by definition give any programme a head start then there is no point debating with you because you clearly don't understand how TV works.

Take my parents for example, whenever I see them they always have BBC on, half the time they aren't even watching it and there's probably something more interesting to them on another channel but they stick with the BBC through tradition if nothing else.

It's losing ratings and facing the axe. Perfectly complementing my point about them getting the axe if they lose ratings, eh?

You might want to read your own posts too, then? You're the one claiming that they have big ratings because they are in prime time.. but then post links showing that despite being on in prime time they don't have the ratings..

I know exactly how TV works. You evidently do not.
