Don't mean to be rude matey, but that sounds like the biggest load of nonsense ever.....drop it in boiling water - painless? Are you sure they're not winding you up?

A big difference in temperature is supposed to kill fish instantly because they are cold blooded, which is why ice is reccomended. Boiling water sounds a bit odd though.
 
One of my Goldfish died today, im so so sad. :( :(

It had that bloaty stomach thing, i used to put a little bit of salt in the water and it seem to do the trick, but it didnt this time, and now im down to two fish. The one that died i had for 4 years, and the other two, ive had one for 2 years, and the other for 4 years. but they both seem nice and healthy.

Good to hear he's recovered! When my fish was ill someone on here linked me to this forum where you can get some good advice. Be aware, however, that the people on there have perhaps a little TOO much experience with fish, in that they've had so many over the years that they've seen them get ailments so exotic that you or I will probably never encounter in our lives. Most fish problems are usually a result of mild indigestion: they'll lay on their sides for a couple of days, and then they'll be fine. If you misdiagnose it as something more serious and treat it for that, the treatment might stress the fish out to the extent where it might not recover naturally and die!

yeah i know there are differing thoughts on the ice though. People are starting to believe that the cold actually just immobilises the fish and it actually takes it a while to die. Best left I think, especially as so many of them make miraculous recoveries!
 
i always feed my fish on sinking pellets and frozen bloodworm not flake because the fish is constantly gulping in air with flake and after a period of time the fish will get swim bladder problems ... try and replace 20% of the water each week also not with tap water but a cheap bottled water .

or just use tap water and a treatment that makes it ok for the fish to live in. It costs about 2 quid a bottle and you only need a small percentage, so it lasts longer and should be cheaper in the longrun than cheap water :)

If anyone WANTS any goldfish (for free), I've got a whole pond load I need to get rid of.

Gold ones, brown ones, big ones, little ones. Have got about 40 of the pesky blighters and I want to remove the pond and put some lawn down.
