Golf R - Test Drive

Based on that email , The way I see it if your in no rush you may as well see how this plays out. Your not committed to anything other than your original signed order which is still in the system progressing. Think of it this way when those cars get to build week they have to have give you a choice of what to choose or you will walk away with your refund. That's it. I guess by the end of next week they will know as vwfs don't want list of cars in system which won't be purchased upon completion of build

I just got that email through, I'm going to ask how much extra for my specific example firstly so I can work out the extra.

However, I think VWFS have screwed up surely and therefore I think they should honour the deal.

What's the TLDR version of their muck up?

As I understand it, VWFS offered a lease deal to these leasing companies, as business only.

At some point confusion arose because a load of them dished out the deal as personal lease. Not really clear if this a fault of VWFS or the lease companies.

VWFS have said 'Woah WTF are you all playing at, we're cancelling those' and now everyone seems to be upset with VW.

For a company the size of VW, I would have thought if it was their cockup they'd deal with it in a manner other than 'cancel it all' which leads me to suspect fault with the lease companies personally.

But the problem for VW is that the deal was sooooo popular it will no doubt HAVE to undervalue the residual value of a Golf R. In 2 years time, the market is going to be flooded with 2 year old, low mileage, examples. This has to be detrimental to their value, and will no doubt make a cracking second hand car buy.

Luckily for me I'll be in the market for such a toy in a couple years. Unluckily for me, they will no doubt mostly be poverty spec.

Well from the email from the lease company today it doesn't look like there will be many as they are getting cancelled unless you:

a) Pay more money - obviously
b) Can show you are a business user

I'd imagine this will knock off about 70% of the people who went for it initially as the extra money they want would add about £660/year to my lease costs. Although I can afford it, the deal is now nowhere near as exciting. I'm very likely to cancel mine but I'd just back to seeing what else is on the market for me :(

Agreed, you will be looking at over £350 a month if you go with 5dr DSG, Metallic and Winter pack. not worth it imho

What is the alternative Cupra 280 ?

I am one of the original genuine PCH and VS are quoting me £311.5 x 23 , £1869, 10K miles. Not good enough me thinks. Monster do you have VW Phils details ?

No, who is VW Phil?

I had an email back to VS earlier and they seemed to indicate that because I receive a car allowance to drive my car for business I might be able to stick with the original deal. I've got to speak to them more on Monday to clarify and send them contracts and such to prove this.

I drove a Leon Cupra 280 and quite liked it but would still rather the R for 2 years.

Slight change if tack from the most recent discussion but my wife and I test drove an M135i today. We both felt it was a far better car than the R in both build quality and performance. The M135i took off from lower down than the R, sounded better and no need for synthesised sounds into the cabin.

Furthermore the distribution of space was better. We found the R had loads of space in the back, which is great, but the boot was tiny. The BMW seemed to nail the proportions perfectly.

I think I said earlier in the thread, and I'll say it again, the looks of the 1 series are a little challenging, but the 135 is a far kore exciting drive than the R for me. On paper we were sold on the R, but wasn't meant to be. I spec'd up a pretty high spec 135i online and came in about 3k cheaper than the spec I wanted on the R, so right now it's looking like a no brainer for us.

In summary, for those looking at the R, make sure you take one out to make sure it meets expectations.

R is more than quick enough for me :) if i was to get a M135i, i would wait as i believe a new release is due after September

I can't watch the video right now but can you tell me what happens :p

Leon is faster and quicker around the track :), costs less, less power, less weight and only 2 wheel drive

they said the Golf would be better in the wet and snow of course

:D

The Leon is a quick car, Top Gear tested it in a group test where both the Leon and Golf R went round the track quicker than the M235i. The whole article was a good read as they had a surprising opinion of the M4 on the road and also had the S1 catch fire with the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 head to head for the first time.
