Any owners here?

I'm looking to buy the mrk 4. Is there anything i need to consider when buying?

What are people's thoughts on this car? Are there better alternatives in its class?

Thanks.

cue a long suggestion of beemers to choose from.

Id suggest you go to a VW specialist forum and ask there mate as i know that a couple of members have the R32 but i doubt many here have a lot of experience with it over a long period of time.

Oh, nice choice btw :D

Im after one thats been written off so i can strip it down for a conversion.

Surely they can't be in the same price bracket??? I've always, ALWAYS wanted an R32 so it'll be difficult to tempt me away from going for one, but that is a nice BMW.

And MNuTz, thanks for the link. Will have mosey on over there this evening and see what's what. I remember a couple on here having an R32, but as the search is down i had to start a new thread.

I wish I could get insured on his car, its such a nice car and a great colour! :)

thanks for the comments guys ;)

Just spent the day at REVO HQ ! Write-up this afternoon !

@ Tried&Tested. uk-mkivs is good, but more focused to the 1.8t's etc. www.r32oc.com is probably the best place to find out what you want to know.

You WILL get numerous people on here trying to disuade you to go to a lesser, inferior car that 'on paper' is better than the mk4 r32 ;)

Best thing to do is try and find one to test drive.

Its an enthusiasts car, so most have been very well looked after. They are generally bomb proof, my car now has 97 thousand miles on it, and today the live mapping of the car came up identical to a car of the same spec that had only 29k on it.

Its a limited edition, and if you get the Deep Blue Pearl colour, its even better as it is the only mk4 golf to come with this colour.

If youhave any more questions ill answer in here, or just sign up to the r32oc, everyone on there will give you a straight answer.

pics for clicks!!

R32 > BMW. You see the 3-series everwhere too.

I looked at the R32 but bought the GTA instead. R32's a better drive, but I like to live dangerously.

I heartily recommend the 330CI, the R32 is a very nice car too though of course, I prefer the bimmer though. Then again I suppose I would, I bought one 8 months ago :p ...can't complain yet, other than to say it has rubish fuel economy, but then I knew it would have when I bought it, same will no doubt be true of the R32.

i had 24mpg today average, full tank of v-power, including 2 hours of live mapping got me from preston, to daventry and back and the light just came on as i got off the m6 at junction 29.

gotta say, if you want something a bit less common, r32 it is.

See, that's a lot better than i would have expected.

If you don't mind me asking:

What reg is yours?
How long did you search to find it?
How much did you pay?
Insurance too bad?
Anything i should look out for when viewing?
Are they as quick as i would expect?..by that i mean i know it's a 3.2 etc, but it seems like quite a big/heavy car.

Got any more pics?! :)

I've seen some lovely ones over at pistonheads for sale, and i'm torn between your colour (very nice!) and the red (very uncommon..at least from what i've read...and very nice too!).

thanks all.

mine is SF03 reg.
I 'stumbled' across it by accident, drove it the same day and bought it the week later.
Insurance wasnt as bad as expected.

Honestly, i dont think there are anything particular you should look for. Make sure it has full history, and dont be alarmed by any squeeks or anything, there are few problems i can point out but the odd squeek in the interior is common.

They are quick yes, but also very heavy. The handling is second to none, a lot better than most people reckon. They do understeer slightly as they are designed like that from the factory, as most people can correct understeer easier than oversteer, however they only do that for a split second and then the power is re-routed to the rear and it pulls round. You can upgrade the Haldex to eliminate the understeer altogether, and a further upgrade to the haldex give it race car type handling - keeping power to all 4 wheels under braking etc.

They have a very short 1st gear. the book time is around 6.5seconds to 60, however they reckon that if the box was a 5 speed/1st gear was longer it would be at least a second off that as standard.

They benefit greatly from better breathing and some minor handling mods, namely front and rear ARB's.

If you are looking for something that is immense fun in the wet / dry / armageddon but also a good cruiser (ive had 30mpg doing 70 on the m-way in 6th.) then its the perfect car.

You need to drive one, you will most likely fall in love, but dont be afraid to give it some pain, it loves it.

My redline has been increased to 7800 today, and as i approach it you can feel it wanting more! great fun!!

more pics, i have hundreds. ill post more up of anything you want to see.

You see Mk4 Golfs every as well, and they are all really cheap now.

Except, for some reason, the R32. It's a great car, but £15,000 is far too much money for a Mk4 Golf.

consider the r32 as the same as the m3 csl. Its limited, therefore can charge more ;)

I agree, on pistonheads you see loads of MK5 R32s in that price range and then MK4 ones too. The MK4 sounds awesome, but I'd rather get a MK5 for that sort of money.

i suppose you want a 5 door one to ? :p

the mk5 is nice. but its not really the same calibre as the mk4. its too soft*

(*this is the opinion of owners of both the mk4 and mk5 that have driven both)
