I'm looking at getting a new car soon and want something with decent MPG as I do around 300 miles a week, which is my main reason for looking at the Golf?

I'm looking at the 1.9 TDi around 2-3 years old.

Anybody think of any alternatives/reasons why I should/shouldn't go with the Golf?

Cheers,

The Golf premium will probably negate any fuel saving compared to some of the competition. Focus is worth considering. 16k a year isn't mega miles so you might find that going diesel over petrol won't actually give the saving you expect.

Around £9-£10K. Isn't the 2.0 the GT TDI? If so, the nice GT letters double my insurance due to my age.

Any other recommendations?

Double!?! That sounds ridiculous - do some more quotes, it's only a badge.

Focus 2.0 TDCi is worth a look if you want a diesel, maybe even a Mondeo

That's what I was wondering too. I've also looked at the Civic Type S...

I've done a few quotes on comparison sites, all come out similar. Double the price of the 1.9 TDi for the 2.0 GT TDi. Ideally looking for something Golf/Focus sized but not dead set on a diesel if the MPG is reasonable.

Not sure re: you're insurance, but check out the Volvo S40 2.0D. I'd avoid the petrols as they are anything but economical.

A Fiat Grande Punto could be worth a look as the diesels aren't bad and they are very cheap considering how new they are.
However, residuals won't be anywhere near as good as a Golf.

If insurance is a stumbling block then i'd recommend spending about half of that budget on a smaller diesel - don't go blowing £10K on a 1.9TDI, it's not worth it.

Insurance is based on risk. If the badge carries more risk (simply because of driver profile or claim statistics) then it will cost more. So, yes, it is only a badge, but no, that doesn't mean it won't cost a lot more to insure.

Come off it. For someone who just wants a cheap first car or a simple runaround, you could do far worse.

I spent over a year driving around in a Fabia 1.9TDI - it wasn't amazing but I wouldn't call it terrible either. The engine was actually one of the better parts of the car. :p

I appreciate that, but double sounds completely mad.

Huge quotes for drivers of a certain age are often the insurers way of basically saying "no thanks" without actually saying "no thanks".

Also, iirc, the GT TDI Golf has a different engine (170bhp)
