Golf TDI - Alternatives?

Each to there own, but i wouldn't spend 10k on a golf. Why not pick yourself up an older one for around 4-5k. Build up your insurance bonus and get yourself something much nicer and fun. I'm sure there will be little difference between a 10k golf and a 4k golf, if you're only looking at the basic models.

If you want something fun to drive try looking at small petrol engined cars maybe, cheaper on insurance and still decent on fuel. My punto sporting might only have 85bhp, but it handles pretty well, returns roughly 40mpg and is very cheap to run. so far it's been reliable too. Only downside is it's not amazingly quick in a straight line. Not suggesting you look at these, just trying to outline the fact that outright power isn't everything if you want fun.

I have been tempted to get myself a clio 172 lately though for more speed. Fuel economy and insurance putting me off slightly.

Nissan Almera 2.2 DCi is worth a look. Go for the SXE and you get the 136bhp 16v engine. Not the best looking car in the world but you could do a lot worse.

20 years old and you want to sink £10,000 into a 1.9 TDI Golf?

Most Golfs of that age are 2.0 TDI - some are GT, some are not. The 1.9TDI was only kept for the bottom of the range model.

£10K is my absolute maximum, this will be my third car coming from a 1.3 Yaris. I want something i can consider a bit of an upgrade along with something a bit less feminine...

Also, I didn't say I wanted to sink £10K in to a Golf - that was the purpose of this thread, to get other recommendations.
