Howdy!

On there I have said I will be going for the: Intel Core 2 Quadro Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail but d1am0nd g33z3r suggested going for a DUO CPU instead?

Now I'm not to fussed about the cash, but if I can save £200 then great. So what would you recommend going for out of:

What would you recommend... I obviously want to get the most out of it for the longest without having to upgrade for a while... thats why I'm thinking of going the Quadro way?

Also, I don;t plan on overclocking this PC... not until it starts getting dated anyway, so I assume that would make a difference?

Just go for dual core, it'll save you a packet and quad core is pretty useless atm anyway. When the time comes that you need a quad core they'll be considerably cheaper and cooler.

BTW, I'd go for the E6600 dual core and overclock - it's easy to do and will save you some cash. £140 for an extra 266MHz is madness :)
 
Sorry trojan, I just added that I don't really want to overclock it... if possible?

One thing that confused me is that the E6600 for example is "2.40GHz clock speed" and my current X2 4400+ is 2.2ghz clock speed... so would that make much difference to my current CPU?
 
Yes, it's a completely different CPU architecture and will provide a significant performance boost. May I ask why you dont want to overclock? If you're set on not overclocking you may as well opt for cheaper components all round as the kit you've chosen is designed for overclockers/enthusiasts - that's why it carries such a price premium over the "value" kit.
 
The reason I dont want to overclock is not cos I don't know how, I've been doing so much ocing the last few days and I have my 4400+ running at 2.6ghz and my RAM to 2-3-2-12 1T... but I'm just always worried that its going to kill my PC quicker than it would at stock... and I don't want to do that.

BUT I have just read around about people with the E6600 and Artic Cooler 7 (I have the Artic 64 pro on my X2 atm) and some have got it to 3.5ghz stable... so you have swayed me.

My basket has gone down from £1,529.72 to £1,140.80 so thats cool!

The E6600 will work on the Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard won't it?
 
Ignore the above about the RAM.. I decided to go for the GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) - £129.24 to save a few quid.

Good move?
 
core duos are behind times already just get quad core and overclock it to run at 1333mhz. quads should be great for multitasking and support for it is gonna be massive later this year. i think photoshop cs3 will make the most of it and couple of games as well but maybe you should wait for price to drop later this month
 
Na I think I will got for the C2D, seeing as you can potentially get 3.5ghz outta each core there!

The Quads are VERY expensive at the moment, and seeing as I won't be using anything to take the use of the 4 cores it would realistically be a waste of money now.

I'm gonna have a mobo that will support the 4 cores, so in the future when they are cheaper I can upgrade!
 
Also what Cooler would you suggest for the E6600?

At the mo I'm gonna go for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro... you reckon thats the best cooler to get the best OCing potential from this CPU?
 
Future games will love quad core imo, that's where its at. 2 cores is nice, but game developers will love 4 cores ;)

People thought nothing was going to take advantage of quad core, then BAM SupCom came out which shows huge improvement. Valve are also working on getting their engine Quad-Core beasty... Then there's Alan wake etc..
 
Too late now, just splashed out £1,161+ notes on my spec, and I went for the Core 2 Duo E6600 w/ Artic Freezer Pro 7!

My mobo supports the quad cores, so I can upgrade in the future if need be!
 
I might just do that... all the parts where labelled as "10+ In Stock" so theoretically I should get it all tomorrow... but you never know these days!

Outta curiousity, what temps does your E6300 get too? Must be piping hot at 15ghz :), but really... what does it get to idle and on load? And what have you got it to really?
 
It's at 3.15Ghz, hits 53c on full load, 40-45 idle. You should get all your kit tomorrow aye, OcUK are very good for shipping promptly.
 
Cool, just wanted to know for a rough idea of what temps I should look for on mine.

Yeah I have ordered tons (including all the parts for my current pc) from OCUK and all have come on time, with great service.

Although I did order a Samsung 32" LCD TV from OCuk and that was not a fun process... ended up getting it elsewhere in the end, but that another story.

Overall OCuK are very good... and hopefully they will be again :)

You made the right choice, quad core is way too expensive right now.

Good luck with the build, take your time making sure the AC F7 sits nice on the cpu, the thermal compound that comes on it is very good.

Temp wise they are ok upto 60 C, personally I like to keep mine well below 50 C to be on the safe side.

Remember to get Intel TAT to check temps and Orthos of course for stress testing.
