Hi,

Been playing the old acoustic guitar for about 6 months and looking for some good songs to play, can play "Older Chests" and "The Animals Have Gone" both Damien rice and looking for songs in the same vein really.

Please help me.....

Damien Rice is a good place to start, I bought the songbooks recently and it sounds a lot better than the tabs on the internet. Some of his songs are quite complex in the "proper" chords used compared to the tabs on the internet so it's good for learning strange chords.

I'd also look at Ray LaMontagne for a similar kind of vein of music. Maybe Coldplay as well?

Oasis - Talk Tonight
Oasis - Masterplan
Oasis - Slideaway
Oasis - Married with children
Nirvana - Man who Sold the World

Backstreet Boys - As Long as you Love me :D :D

Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

and my fave to play by a MILE:

Poets of the Fall - Late Goodbye (you may know this as the song from Max Payne 2 credits :p) it's freakin awesome.

Something like Classical Gas maybe a good place to start. It's a really versatile piece that you can make suit whatever standard of guitar you are at.

One of my favourites to play is an instrumental called Cannonball Rag by Merle Travis. These are challenging pieces though, so expect a fair bit of work. If you do decide to try to learn them, or any more songs in this style, then just ask if you need any help. :)

Any help would be great, Classical Gas, who is that by?

Trace Bundy's version of 'I Want It That Way' is the only non-gayer version of the song.

As for good finger picking check out Bert Jansch if you want to be shown how it's really done by a guy older than my dad :p Angie is particularly good.

I've started writing my own stuff now so haven't really been covering things for a while but I have been trying to learn Andy McKee's drifting. (maybe a little bit advanced after 6 months of playing).

There are tabs for Newton Faulkner's stuff now which is quite interesting if you wanted to diversify your playing style and tuning knowledge.

I quite like taking fairly simple songs and turning them into finger-style tracks. For example I've made up my own finger-style section and lead for Goo-Goo dolls - Iris.

Hmmm...Damien 'Busker-lite' Rice eh? A man more bland than the food product he's named after. Forgive me if i try and edge you away from playing that and towards something with a bit more substance. If you're interested in learning some fingerstyle pieces you'd maybe like to check out Nick Drake, some excellent tabs can be found here:

Should also help you delve into the interesting world of alternative tunings as well. Lots of fun to be had there....
