Good areas of Birmingham?

My parents are thinking of relocating from Nottingham to Birmingham, into a smaller house, and renting the current house to a family.

Could someone who knows the area give me a list of the areas which they should consider... Their budget is around the £300k mark. They want a new house.

So far the obvious has been Edgbaston, but you dont really get that much for your money, and there is a lack of new houses. They have been advised to look at Sutton Coldfield, but is this a good area?

Thanks

Well firstly I'm assuming you do actually mean Birmingham, and are thus excluding Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge. At the £300k mark these areas are certainly worth a look but it depends exactly what they're expecting to get for their money. You aren't going to get a detached house in a decent area of Solihull for £300k.

Edgbaston is a decent area, as you've mentioned. Mosley, just up the road, is worth a look as it has good and bad bits. Hall Green (the Shirley end of it at least) is fairly pleasant in areas (that's where we are).

Sutton is very nice in places though I don't know it that well. It's a bit outside of Birmingham itself, they do realise this? If they do then it's certainly worth a look as you'll probably get more for your money outside the city and its main suburbs.

They really want to move here!? Edgebaston is the obvious choice if your after a nice area, next one over is Selly Oak, thats where my new house is. Avoid Perry Barr, Aston, Small Heath like the plague. Some parts of edgebaston arn't too nice btw.

Why are they moving to Birmingham if you dont mind me asking?

Haha, thanks for the info guys, I honestly cannot figure out why they are attracted to birmingham. Im trying to convince them to move to the southeast instead. Somewhere like guildford, surrey would be much cheaper than london, and it would be a hell of a lot nicer than brum!

Technically that is the home counties and greater london area ;)

I live in Harborne, Birmingham and my area is nice, 300k could buy you a 3 maybe 4 if your lucky bedroom detached house. Definetely worth a look around.

If you're going to look at selly oak, make sure it is actually selly oak, and not the student filled bournbrook, which is still called selly oak by most people.

As for Edgbaston, I'm in Edgbaston, and it's not nice because I'm at the north end of it - near smethwick. Stick to the moseley end of Edgbaston ;)

£350k would be the minimum I would expect to see a detached house for (near the uni/Edgbaston), and it won't be a new house at that.

There are some really dodgy areas in brum, the problem is with a lot of the very good areas, probably with any major city, is that they're surrounded by the scummy horrid areas.

Solihull would probably be the best choice, but there are some very 'chavvy' areas in some places.

Castle Bromwich, where I live ususally isn't hat bad, but on one side it's next to a very chavvy area, and on the other side it is a large amound of asians outnumbering whites about 50 to 1, those areas I would avoid like the plague, as I wouldn't feel safe at all. Those include Saltley, Alumn Rock, Spark Hill, Aston to name a few.

Mosely is a very nice area in parts, as is Selly Oak, Edgbaston, Bournville and Harborne. Parts of Selly Oak are very, very dingey partly because of it is 95% students by the University, which is where I live.

You've also got Walsall and moving north west towards the black country a bit, there are some really nice areas around there too, and it's quite close to M5 / M6.

South east is Reddich, that's got a lot of new houses, but it is a bit of a distance from Birmingham.

For that I repeat my first statement of the thread.

I find Newcastle and Nottingham to be two of the nicest cities in England. As with all cities, there are good and bad areas but if you can afford to be relatively comfortable, either of the above is perfect.

And with Notts/Newcastle, everyopne doesn't sound like they have a nasal infection and an innate desire to draw out their voooowuuuurrlls.

Since when was Nottingham that "nice" an area anyway. Hardly like moving from Mayfair to the Bronx is it :p I believe it's the gun capital of the UK and when I've been there I've not thought much of it. Lots of hookers about and I have a few friends at uni there who've been mugged on the way home. Not saying it's all bad but Brum isn't really that bad either IMO. And Penski at least you can understand brummies, more than you can say for Geordies ;) :p

I can understand Geordies better than Brummies.

I have no affiliation to either.

If you read what I actually posted, you'll see that I said 'if you can afford to be relatively comfortable, either of the above is perfect.'

I stand by that statement.
