I think the next logical step is for williamd to ask for books published between the 15th of December 2008 and the 18th of December 2008, with a page count matching exactly 317 pages, written by an author no one has heard of (not even the authors own mother).
Based on your criteria, I would recommend some Irvine Welsh. In particular Trainspotting (brilliant), Marabou Stork Nightmares (good) or Glue (good). The latter might be better suited to your 'coming of age' requirement, but I would take Trainspotting over any of his other books.
Another good one is The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks.
Also, American Psycho, whilst being a bit sick, is also a brilliant and thought provoking story, much better than the film adaptation - but aren't most books?

Are there any books suggested so far that do interest you? If there are then we could possibly recommend so more along those lines because at the moment you've just dismissed a lot of books without actually saying ones that might interest you. You might get a few choices by a very slow process of elimination but I suspect most people will have got bored at having ideas rejected long before you reach the point of getting what you want.
