Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I'm looking at getting one of these.

What OS for using it as a media player and network storage for a backup? I'd want a remote, 1080p playback with sound via HDMI (presume I need a GPU for this, which one?). I'd also like it to have the ability to download from newsgroups as well as run Opera browser (very important for me).

1080p, it may struggle on doing this... But the rest can easily be provided via any Linux distro.

SABNzbd for NG

I don't mind adding more RAM and another GPU for 1080p playback.

I take it Ubuntu server would work nicely?

Can Windows see Linux shares?

Windows shares, use Samba

You're best off using Ubuntu desktop, as that comes with GUI, or my new personal favourite, Fedora 15

Not sure if RAM would improve 1080p, it might be limited by CPU, 720p has been proven to work fine though

I guess I could just stream it to my WD Live box instead of playing 1080p on it, then I wouldn't have to worry about remote etc.

I'd just want to use it then for Opera and centralised storage, means I can switch my PC off and leave this thing on 24/7. I might give Fedora 15 a go then. Would it support remote access from my PC to configure it all etc?

Lucky I have an old monitor, keyboard and mouse in the spare room.

It seems ideal really as I've wanted a NAS for ages but couldn't justify the price, this thing is like a 4 port NAS and more. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Any hints as to where to get it from for the cheapest? Email in trust...

Got mine from one of the online electrical retailers at £238 with £100 cash back and an extra 4% cash back linking from my quidco account...

We can't specify stores on this forum though...

Awesome deal, after all the discounts it was about 130 quid!

Comes with about 1GB ram and 250gb HDD, easy enough to upgrade, will cost about £40 for 8GB of RAM and £200 for 4 x 2TB HDDs.

About to buy one of these to act as a VPN server, Clicky/ RRDTool stats display screen for the office, and backup server.

Getting 4Gb RAM with it for an extra £17- will also keep an eye out for some bargain Tb HDD's.

Has anyone gone down the software RAID 5 route? or is it advisable to stick to a hardware- controlled RAID setup?

In this case, personally prefer hardware raid myself, it costs a bit more obviously, but I prefer it for the following reasons:

1. Less complicated to work with
2. More reliable (imo)
3. Requires less resources on system (good since cpu isn't particularly amazing on this model)
4. Hardware RAID generally better for optimization.

But that's all just in my opinion, I'm sure someone else will disagree, it's all personal preference at the end of the day!

This is a bit of a newbie question...

I have just bought a HP Microserver and now need to get an OS onto it...

I would like the server to...

1. Act as a mailserver for my domain
2. Host a web server which has dynamic content written in java backed by a MySQL database
3. Host a version control repository and Continous build system
4. Host a wiki
5. Host a forum/BB

All these will be very low traffic so the box should be capable enough

So... I thought I could create a server with multiple VMs to separate all these out.

Which base operating system would be best and which VM technology to look after the VMs? I have both windows xp and ubuntu to hand but am unsure if I should have ubuntu as host as well as client ??

Also... Maybe I am being too ambitious and should instead just run the machine as a ubuntu server with no VMs???

Thanks in Advance
Gavin

Having done more googling I seem to have come across the idea of running ESXi from a USB memory stick and then hosting client O/S. This seems like a really interesting idea.

Would ESXi be a good choice for this hardware? Have other people got this working?

Is it possible to load Bitnami images into this configuration?

Thanks in Advance
Gavin
