Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

RAM - I used these:KVR1066D3N7/4G

It doesn't recognise more than 8GB total iirc - or does the hacked BIOS get around that constraint?

Nope, you can install the hacked BIOS independently.

Can anyone confirm if this ram (KVR1333D3N9K2/8G) works OK in the Microserver? I bought some Corsair ValueRam that I assumed would work OK but it appears it doesn't. Blue screens happen frequently. Popped the original 1GB DIMM back in and no more blue screens.

I am busy mem-testing it now, could just be a faulty DIMM but if it isn't I will just buy the Kingston stuff, assuming its confirmed to work.

Hi all

New server has arrived and after some initial grief in getting sound out of the HDMI port under ubuntu server 11.04 and XBMC over the top.. it now seems to be running fine (but dont ask how I got working as im not too sure)
Plays 1080p fine with around 5% cpu utilisation

top - 07:38:21 up 1:06, 1 user, load average: 0.87, 0.81, 0.55
Tasks: 104 total, 1 running, 103 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 4.8%us, 1.8%sy, 0.8%ni, 91.5%id, 0.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.6%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 4056688k total, 816512k used, 3240176k free, 39156k buffers
Swap: 4192252k total, 0k used, 4192252k free, 380076k cached

With the stock drive getting these temps when playing 1080p for about half an hour

sudo hddtemp /dev/sda*
/dev/sda: VB0250EAVER: 38°C

and I think this is the 512mb KFA 210 graphics card below

sensors
k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +43.0°C (high = +70.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Its located in a media cabinet under the TV with the door closed ......are these ok temps for that stock drive - or should it be replaced ?

Currently got a coolspin 53000 on order

sudo hddtemp /dev/sda*

Assuming it is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12:

seagate said:
2.9.1 Ambient temperature
Ambient temperature is defined as the temperature of the environment immediately surrounding the drive. Actual
drive case temperature should not exceed 69°C (156°F) within the operating ambient conditions.
Operating: 0° to 60°C (32° to 140°F)
Non-operating: –40° to 70°C (–40° to 158°F)

Most drives should have similar operating limits.

I have a question about drivers: Which drivers should I install, other than the BIOS, for best results with WHS 2011? (I've just downloaded chipset, network, and display drivers, but I'm not sure all/any of them are necessary with WHS 2011...?) Thanks!

Thats all you need.

Mine is arriving tomorrow- Ordered another 4Gb RAM with it and will probably add another 4Gb and a couple of 2TB HDDs to sit in RAID - Planning on running 3 virtual environments on ESXI :)

Quick question: Is there just the one version of WHS 2011? Or are there OEM and retail versions? (I'm about to buy it for £36.86... Sounds about right?)

Hi, if you fit a optical drive or 3.5" with brackets etc, you use the 4 studs supplied ie screwed into inside of the door. These stick out & slide into the slots on inside of ODD bay. Its locked or opened by spring lever at back, RH side (looking from front) of bay. I have used one of those trays with a locked door on front to fit HDD inside, sides spring a bit, so have wedged a bit of closed cell foam either side.
Those brackets from Overclockers look OK, they seem to have threaded holes both sides (those i have only in one side, so wouldn't be able to fit studs) ie to screw into HDD, & screw in supplied studs.
It does look like, if i fitted brackets i have (20mm width each), i would have about 3mm of play ? Strange. Just looked at a old Opt drive i have, that looks like it would fit in bang on.

Cheers BOB

This thread is monstrously long (I sold my first uServer at around page 30!)

1) Whats the current cheapest place to get one priced at - £222.26, £192.52, £196.68 - I bought my first from the £222.26 place ;) but might buy one again!

2) Any particular Ram requirements? Height? Speed etc?

We can't really say, but I got mine at £222 a couple of days ago.

I got my Kingston RAM at £17 for 4Gb from the £222 place the other day :)

Don't get ram with heat spreaders that higher then the ram itself.
