Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Seen some chatter that the new n40l is a lot more electricity hungry and hardly any faster than the n36l, is this correct please? If I swoop mine would be used 24/7 as a nas/esxi test lab/xbmc frontend

It will be slightly as its a higher clock speed and more ram, but nothing to write home about I shouldn't think.

6W I believe from this quote:

any idea how many Watts this uses idle as the N36L varient? I have no idea if 6W is a big increase

How many disks can you get in these micro servers. It states the N40L has 4 internal bays free but can some be altered/expanded?

You can fit more smaller 2.5" drives, there is a 5.25" bay adapter that allows it.

You need to flash the other bios that enables full speed on the esata to get the real benefits though.

The amount is negligible per month for the time it will save you copying to memory sticks, worrying about compatibility, etc.

I make it £2.05 a month based on 19p kWh. Remember that is idle though, some real world values of current servers measured by plug meters would be nice.

Yikes now those kind of numbers makes think twice

I agree would like to see real consumption wonder how thirsty they are compared to acer revos.....

Set it to hibernate if not used for 30 mins and then wake it up with WOL. That will save some electricity.

If your paying 19p per unit then you need to look into changing your energy supplier. I'm currently paying 9.02p per unit (inc. Vat).

Assuming your other calculations are correct this would make it a much more reasonable £0.97 per month.

i cannot seem to find an adaptor to fit 2 drives into the odd bay, are they easy to come by? also how do you re-route the cable from the back for the 6the drive?

thanks

ordered that n36l last night as the cashback offer was ending, thought it would e extended but did not want to chance it, but its being offered on the n40l now

the n40l is about £20 more expensive, comes with 1gb more ram, slightly faster processor, but had a 150w psu rather than the 200w in the n36l

is it worth canelling the n36l and reordering the n40l?

what do people think?

...and even then it isn't like that £1 of electricity just vanishes; every Watt the server converts to heat is approx. one less Watt that your thermostatically controlled central heating will consume.

Where have you found the cashback being offered on the N40L?

Not available anymore in UK and EOL elsewhere in world. I just sold one of my two on another forum. Considering to buy the N40L so might keep this other one!
