Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I may be missing something obvious here, but how on earth do i install an OS with a memory stick?
I've the windows 7 iso extracted onto a usb stick and it is not working? This has worked with other systems (not sure about HP) before, so how do i do it?
Using a optical drive is out of the question.

Thanks for any answers.

Universal USB Installer

You can't just extract it, because there is no boot sector.

What sort of speeds are people getting from their SATA drive plugged into the port originally meant for the ODD with the latest Aug '11 BIOS?

Is their a better bios available?

Thanks guys :)

i built my freenas server using 4 x wd20ears 2tb but i need one more but wd dont seem to have these anymore, would a different wd 2tb drive work ok alongside the other 5 wd20ears that I have already?

I think you'll find it will by the end of the day.

This is an extract of what I got today.
"Just to let you know, HP have not yet updated their claim form for this offer but that should happen later today or tomorrow".

Looks like it will have cashback. Just found somewhere offering it for sale with it. I wish they hadn't because I very nearly bought the N36L and managed to resist it until the deal expired yesterday. Now it seems the deal is back on.

There's not much difference between the two machiens though is there? An axtra 0.2mhz and an extra 1gb RAM. Not huge. The CPU isn't a leap ahead and the RAM will probably be discarded by a lot of people when they upgrade.

EDIT: I love the comment on one forum... "soon this will be the cheapest way to buy a 250gb hard drive" :D

My Microserver seems to have broken itself :(

Last time I used it, it kept BSODing on Windows boot - I read something about AHCI issues, and sure enough it booted up after switching to IDE mode. Rebooted a few times since, all seemed fine.

Tried firing it up today - BSODs again regardless of safe modes etc. Tried reinstalling windows - went through the 2 or three reboots needed with no fuss - came to finally start Windows and it BSODs again! Tried different hard drive - again it installs no problem, but won't finally boot. Loaded BIOS defaults - no joy.

Any ideas? Presumably the RAM and 5450 can't be at fault if they work through the install process?

I had similar issues and it was down to a combiantion of AHCI and IDE. You need to stick to one or the other, and some times WHS (the original) can be fussy as it won't have the AHCI drivers. I think a fresh install on IDE mode, make sure you delete the partitions on the drive to ensure this.

Thought I had used IDE last time - loading BIOS defaults must have changed it back to AHCI. (I'm sure I checked as well - though it appears not!)

Definitely on IDE now, and reinstalling as we speak. Fingers crossed!

I had been deleting partitions on the previous attempts, and creating slightly different sized new ones (hoping it might somehow help change any lingering errors :p )

Using W7 Ultimate 64, if that makes any difference?

Cheers

W7 ultimate will be fine, but pretty pointless as it's not a server operating system.

Grab WHS 2011 or WHS if you want to use it as it was intended.

Edit: You can install the AHCI driver later on and then enable it in BIOS if required

Oh yeah I fully intend to use WHS 2011, but in the meantime, I want it up and running quickly for HTPC duties.

It's just finished installing, definitely IDE, old partitions deleted, and it's still offering the safe mode screen and then a BSOD regardless of the mode chosen :(
