Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

This thread could really do with a big tidy up.

Would be easier if a MOD or a willing helper extracted all the decent info and created a locked sticky? Just so the same questions/answers are not repeated and repeated and all the cra**y conflicting advice is weeded out :)

Hi - A first time caller here!

I have just taken delivery of one of these 40L servers and have a couple of questions:

Q1 - I currently have a Dlink DNS-323 running with a pair of 2Gb drives. How do I get these drives up and running in the 40L box. I’m assuming there is a bit more to it than just removing disk from Box A and placing them in Box B

Q2 - I happen to have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 1024MB video card kicking around. Would this be suitable for my system?

Thanks

So I'm intrigued by people using this box as an ESXI server, what kinda hit do you see on disc performance, I'm tempted to run WHS in a VM.

Guys, what is the situation with pci/pci-e slots in these? How many are there, are they all pci-e, full or half height and is there any restriction on card depth?

Hi all

I am looking to get a new nic for the n36 as the onboard nic seems to not work well under linux - the wake on lan feature that is

Does anybody have any recomendations for a new gigabit nic that would fit and work well

I think the Intel Gigabit CT LP card will do the job

Just wanted to know if anybody has any other thoughts

Thanks

This is the one I have and WOL works fine (Server 2008 R2). I wouldn't have thought WOL needs OS support? Surely just the card and BIOS have to support it? I guess the driver has to support it, but I just assumed the software turns on/off the hardware feature?

It depends which sleep state you're wanting to WOL from.

what kind of standby is the best, will only really access the server several times a week and I want it to be as energy saving as possjble , would it just be worth switching it on when I need it only? or can someone suggest somthing more efficent
was thinking of using whs2011
