Is that the default? I just do shutdown on the server, don't recall specifying any specific modes (maybe it is an option in the Intel driver I have not looked at?).

Yes S5 is the state if the machine is powered down but still connected to the mains (and WOL is enabled in the BIOS). This leaves the NIC active (will still have its LEDs illuminated) to listen for the ‘magic packets’ that’ll tell it to wake up.

would that also work with a wireless usb dongle?
or i presume i can enable wake on usb or similar?

i soon as i read that back i knew it wouldnt

so how can i get it to wake up wirelessly?
could i do this with a wireless pci card?

What O/S are you going to use?

You could wake it from sleep.

servers going to go where there is no network points so i need it to work wirelessly or maybe powerline adapters as a second choice if i have no better options?

NO you cant use wireless on WHS 2011. You should really have a direct gigabit ethernet into it, but you could go with a pair of 500mbps powerline adaptors. Is it not possible for you to go direct to a gigabit switch?

You should be able to WoL over a wireless bridge. This would obviously waste some additional power due to having to have an additional wireless device running 24/7.

WoL is actually possible over wireless. The problem is keeping a wireless adapter powered and listening with the Microserver in a S5 sleep state.

You may be able to get WoL working over wireless if you use one of the higher sleep states. You’re then at the mercy of the supplied drivers, and whether they’ve included WoL support or not.

Or as you said over wireless bridge is possible. The old router connects to your wireless network and then you wire you router to the server. However it isn't so stable. Best find out and try.

You may aswell go with powerline 500mbs (http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-115-EX) as wireless may drop out and you don't really want that for a WHS 2011 box.

could one of these be capable of running games? assuming you upgraded the memory and added a fanless graphics card. Im not talking Call of duty 3d games etc... but could it play the any new rpgs and footy manager games or is the cpu not up to it?

According to football manager 2012's website you can play it on win XP as it requires 1.4Ghz + for Xp and 2GHz + For W7. You could go with some thing like a GT220 Low profile. But i would go with a fanned one as there would be no air passing over the PCI-E slots.

thanks for your suggestions guys, looks like i will be going for the powerline adapters, but in the mean time a LONG cable trailing on the floor will have to do

Just a quick question, have you got one of these graphics cards installed in a microserver, I'm asking becasue I've just got a N40L and would like to add a graphics card and a Black Gold tv card, the space looks a bit on the tight side.

I made a start with mine last night:

I already had 4GB of ram laying around, and have it populated with an additional three 2TB drives.

It'll run ESXi which will run UNRAID directly from USB stick and pfSense for routing.
