Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Guys i have a couple questions:

Is this worth buying?
HP 3y Nbd MicroServer HW Support,ProLiant MicroServer,3 years of hardware support. Next business day onsite response. 8am-5pm, Std bus days excluding HP holidays.

Also will i be able to share files to xbox 360, pc and other devices through WHS 2011?

Cheers guys.

I would take the 4 drives out of the soft raid then try copying from 1 2tb to another and check the speeds.
I just tried copying from the 250GB drive to the RAID5 array and got speeds over 100MB/s, so surely the software RAID isn't causing the problem of slow speeds over the network?

Not at all

I've tried a few test transfers between different devives on my own network since you brought the problem up

My HP is using a FreeNAS software RAID 5 array and a couple of single drives as well ( I just can't afford to shove money at large capacity drives at the moment :) )

Transfer speeds seem to vary greatly dependent on :-

file size

between drives internal to Micro

between Micro and Synology NAS

between Micro and internal drives in networked computers ( wired Gig )

between Micro and USB devices attached at various points

etc

it's a tough cookie to solve and is very dependent on many variables along the way :(

4x 2TB drives in RAID5 with the 250GB as a boot drive. It's running Windows Home Server 2011.

This is exactly how I am looking to set mine up, but I did have a concern, having never setup up a server or raid before..

Is there a vulnerability having the OS on the separate 250gb drive. If that went down, would you lose the integrity of the software raid drives by needing a new OS drive and fresh install?

Also, would a raid card be better than relying on WHS software, and if so what recommendations for this server?
