Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Hi again

Any idea on this one

Im getting slow write speed to the server when copying a file from windows to ubuntu server ...... I get 20MB/sec max in windows sometimes but generally around 10MB/sec - 2 x 2tb hitachi coolspins not raided or anything

Checked bios options - just tried setting to IDE - dont think its made any difference - write cache is disabled as well - are there any other options in the bios I should look at ????

Im using an Intel gigabit port which was added to the microserver (as afaik the internal one doesnt work with WOL under ubuntu)

I have everything gigabit (cat 6) - all hard wired apart from laptop im transferring from but that does have a 6300 ultimate wireless N 3 stream card in the laptop connecting to a asus rt-n66u (very near by)
(laptop only has 100mb ethernet)

Any ideas on where I can go from here???

Not sure if its the default Samba setting or just microserver issues

Thanks for any advice

Is this to the laptop over 100mbs?

Laptop is the only thing thats not wired at the moment (so its over wireless - 5ghz)

Laptop does have ethernet but the laptop is 100mb only (hence not using the inbuilt card)

However I do have a Belkin Gigabit Express card which Ive also added to the laptop to make GigE - but that will only run at 100mb for some reason - when I set to GigE I get network cable unplugged

Everything else is GigE - Cat 6 and Switches are all GigE too

When I try the Express card on 100mb I get the following

Really I need a proper GigE laptop to test I suppose

5GHz wifi is still slower than 100mbs. So all the gigabit stuff makes no diffrence.

I maybe getting my mbps and MB/sec confused but Im sure some people are getting transfers of about 100 MB/sec when transferring from windows...I maybe wrong

I get 10-20 MB/sec max - which I think equates to around 160mbps (through wireless)

Which is about right for the wireless on this router I suppose

Hence I guess the next step is to try a proper Gige laptop

Are you sure its 20MB/s?

100mb/s gives you about ~ 12MB/s

Got mine the other day, chucked in my spare Agility 3 120gb ssd as the boot drive with Windows 7 on it.

Running it as a media/file server for the home but have a couple of questions for the experts & longer term users.

Got 4 HDD's that I can throw in it from my main PC (also W7), they contain my media files that I've backed up off my Netgear ReadyNas. Can I just throw them into the drive bays & they'll be picked up OK? - No need for formatting etc

Also for the shares, what is the best way to get them seen by an Apple TV 2? Just share with a Guest account or do I need to set something else up?

(Shares/RDP etc has never been my strong point :D )

You can just chuck in the drives and they will be seen by the O/S no need for formating.

I am unsure about the apple TV thing. I thought for apple tv's you had to run a itunes server. But i am likley wrong.

It's probably not the best place for this but worth a shot. Bought one of these and stuck a Sapphire HD 5450 in to run xbmc on it.

With Ubuntu, the open-source driver didn't play sound over HDMI, when I installed the closed-source driver, the green (I think) disappears from the display for a few minutes every 30 or so. Any ideas? Not a hardware fault as I tried two cards with the same chipset.
