Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

So another question.

Taken 2 x 1TB Seagate drives out of my NAS & want to add them into the server, but run them as a RAID 1 Mirror so that I have redundancy as they'll be used to store pictures/important stuff.

What do I need to do in Disk Management to get these to run as a single drive (mirrored).

EDIT:

D'oh.

Seems I answered my own question. Drives were formatted as Simple Volumes, so deleted both, then right-clicked one drive & the RAID options became available.

i would do hardware raid if i where you its much quicker.

But i would prefer to do windows backup over both the other options of raid.

As the main causes of file loss is power surges and virus/malware and raid only protects if one drive dies.

It's probably not the best place for this but worth a shot. Bought one of these and stuck a Sapphire HD 5450 in to run xbmc on it.

With Ubuntu, the open-source driver didn't play sound over HDMI, when I installed the closed-source driver, the green (I think) disappears from the display for a few minutes every 30 or so. Any ideas? Not a hardware fault as I tried two cards with the same chipset.

Fixed it now! For the record, using radeonhd and not radeon or fglrx as the driver sorted it.

edit: no it didn't, back to square one :(

Hi guys, looking into getting one of these but i'm fairly clueless on RAID!

I know that the onboard controller only supports up to RAID1, however I'd like to run RAID5 across three 2tb disks so i can expand my storage as and when i need to. Is it possible/advised to do this using software/OS? If so which would people typically recommend?

If not am i assuming i'd need to buy a hardware raid controller and fit it into the system?

Got mine the other day, chucked in my spare Agility 3 120gb ssd as the boot drive with Windows 7 on it.

Running it as a media/file server for the home but have a couple of questions for the experts & longer term users.

Got 4 HDD's that I can throw in it from my main PC (also W7), they contain my media files that I've backed up off my Netgear ReadyNas. Can I just throw them into the drive bays & they'll be picked up OK? - No need for formatting etc

Also for the shares, what is the best way to get them seen by an Apple TV 2? Just share with a Guest account or do I need to set something else up?

(Shares/RDP etc has never been my strong point :D )

As for the apple TV - i just used the Admin account and set them up as SMB - worked perfectly :D, just waiting for an AppleTV3 Jailbreak now :(

How long did it take for you guys to get your cashback? mine has been over 4 weeks now

Annoying, with the cash back these are about $180 in the UK, Here in the States they don;t have any offers, and are $350! :(
Guess I'll have to get one from the UK and ship it over.

Soooooo maaannnnny paaaagggggessssss :(

Edit: Can only find a link to the Sharkoon 6 bay thing, don't need that many really!

This one works. In essence it is a caddy that 100% mimics the connector positions of a 3.5" drive. As jamesfreddie mentioned, some of basic brackets, like OCZ, do not fit.

SInce this server is for storing files music and my movies, and stream all over my Mac universe, caN YOU PLEASE HELP me and advice :

1 - what video card should i buy for stream videos and decode ? ( not to play 3d)
2 - what OS should i install to be more compatible with mac universe (smb is ok) and same time can run plex server on it?
3 - its 4 gb of memory ok for what i need? streamming - nothing else
4 - any more advices that you realize i need to setup my machine

Thks in advance

Best regards to all

Edgar

If i understand correctly from that description of use, it sounds to me like you don't need a graphics card and the onboard will be fine, all the microserver is doing is streaming the files and not doing any decoding. I stream 720p content from my Microservers onto my 2x Macminis and MBP using XBMC without a hitch.

If the above understanding is correct;
1 - none
2 - Freenas or Windows HS11 (i have 2 boxes and run 1 on each)
3 - 4gb works perfectly for me
4 - To get the best out of the little beauty (and if you plan to install 4+ HDDs) you will need to install the BIOS mod to enable AHCI on all SATA ports

I'm using this video card from OCUK MSI HD 5450 1024MB GDDR5 Low Profile PCI-Express Graphics Card (was on this week only at £19.99), works just fine.
